Is taking a regular iron supplement is good to improve ferritin?
Ferritin: Is taking a regular iron... - Pernicious Anaemi...
Ferritin
Hi! Yes, that's what I do. If I stop my daily Iron supplementation i will be anaemic again in few months. But I must advise you to follow your GP. Some PA patients can still absorb Iron from food and too much Iron in the bloodstream is dangerous. ((Hugs))
Scientist, not medic.
Ferritin is a useful indicator of Iron status, but it's not the only one. Serum Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity are useful too. Likewise Hb, MCV and RDW from the Full Blood Count are good indicators of what's going on.
Just don't take iron un-supervised because it can be dangerous.
Good luck!
Yes, I use gentle supplements - Spatone (bonus with that is I take it in orange juice with my dinner, so get an acidic drink too - both of which help me) or Feroglobin or Floradix.
My ferritin was 17 when my B12D was found in 2018, but not mentioned at all by GP that it was quite low and could be contributing to the debilitating fatigue, muscle aches, headaches etc, NOR that it would be a good idea to top up a bit once starting B12 replacement jabs.
I got better on loading doses, then crashed massively. It was only then that I got print out of my blood test results & went through with fine tooth comb. Started Spatone and it definitely helped gradually.
Been ill again for ages (jabs stopped 'due to covid') and finally getting ferritin checked again (I have asked for full iron panel but I doubt I will get that) after about 4 rounds of blood tests and mentioning it repeatedly. I want to know how much I have managed to raise it, if at all.
