Negative ANA

Hi!

I was recently diagnosed with PA because I have an antibody to parietal cell but I don’t have an antibody to intrinsic factor. I was just tested for a full ANA and it was negative, does this mean I don’t have pernicious anemia? I have so many of the pernicious anemia symptoms.

Parietal cell antibody tests aren't much use because a lot of people without PA test positive.

IF antibody tests can;t be used to rule out PA, because half of those with PA test negative.

ANA antibodies aren't associated with PA.

Statistical analysis shows that there is no significant difference in the occurrence of ANA and EmA between the PA (Pernicious Anaemia) and C (Control) groups.

Hi,

Some links about PA and B12 deficiency that may be of interest.

PAS (Pernicious Anaemia Society)

Based in Wales, UK. Has some members in other countries.

There is a helpline number that PAS members can ring and an online contact form.

PA tests

Intrinsic Factor Antibody (IFA) test

labtestsonline.org/tests/in...

Parietal Cell Antibody (PCA) test

labtestsonline.org/tests/pa...

PCA is not recommended as a diagnostic test for PA in UK.

It is still possible to have PA with a negative result in IFA or PCA test.

About 50% of people with PA test negative on IFA test.

About 10% of people with PA test negative on PCA test.

"Living with Pernicious Anaemia and Vitamin B12 Deficiency" by Martyn Hooper

Has several case studies.
