I was diagnosed with PA in May/June 2020 and have been self-injecting for the past six months. Initially I was injecting 5000 mcg methylcobalamin daily, then dropped down to weekly and had a recurrence of symptoms. I am now at 2000 mcg B12 daily, alternating hydroxocobalamin and methylcobalamin every other day. This schedule seems to work well for me. I also inject thiamine hydrochloride twice daily, as it was discovered recently that I also have a thiamine deficiency. My blood serum levels of B12 were just checked by a new doctor and found to be very high at around 70,000. My new doctor wants me to discontinue B12 until levels fall within normal range; however, when I stop for more than a week, I have a major recurrence of symptoms. Does anyone know if having levels this high can cause problems? I don't have an explanation for why my body needs daily injections when there is clearly such a high level of B12 in my bloodstream.
Very High B12 Serum Level: I was... - Pernicious Anaemi...
Very High B12 Serum Level
You obviously need high levels. Like most of us do. Not sure if an idea to lesson doses a little.
Most manage on 1mg Injections of b12 of whatever sort.
I I wouldnt abruptly stop whatever .
See what others think
No , don't lower amount of injections . You cannot overdose on b12 luckily.unlike some vitamins , so do not worry about high readings .Keep on injecting every other day until your symptoms stop improving . Are you taking a modest B9 tablet daily ? ( folic acid - it works with B12 ) Then you need a regularity of injection that keeps symptoms at bay .Yes , Pernicious Anaemia is an autoimmune condition, and they rarely come alone - hence the thyroid condition , also autoimmune . These conditions are for life-long ,so you must always take your treatments .
Best wishes .
I do take folate as part of a B complex, along with a multivitamin. It's good to hear that extremely high blood serum levels don't seem to be a problem. I've never noticed any ill effects from B12 injections aside from symptoms of low potassium, which I handle with plenty of coconut water and high potassium foods. I must admit I was alarmed when I found out my levels were so high. 70,000 is extremely high! I will continue to inject, as I certainly don't want a reoccurrence of symptoms.
