Tests to prove B12 injection need to my doctor: Schillings, Active B12 MMA (are they the same?)

I’m asking because I’ve convinced her to prescribe injections for once a week, but am always concerned that my extra supply from Germany might run out.

I’ve never had the Schilling’s Test or Intrinsic Factor (are they different?) Nor have I had an MMA ( which I would assume would be normal now) My homocysteine was normal

I have documentation of MCV of 102 even though my plasma level of B12 was greater than 2,000 (I was taking sublingual

tablets at the time) so on that and my begging she prescribed

I’m managing on injections every three days with some sublingual as well I’m reluctant to go to every other day as I’m afraid I’ll run out, so hoping sublingual supplementation will carry me through.

This has been a life changing site for me. I cannot thank you enough. My eyes are brimming with tears as I think of all the lost days to fatigue, difficulty sleeping, sore throats, ringing/grinding in my ears-numbness in extremities-bur by far the worst was the fatigue!

GlD to heR tiuve weekly b12 Injections prescribed.

Well done for persevering.

Yes the tests are different. The shilling test as I belie e wad more accurate but too expensive and involved

The treatment is the same as long as it is given!

IFA test picks uk about 50% who have PA

If you inject every three days , why don’t you order 100 ( 10 x 10 ) pack of B12 ampoules from Germany now ? The use by date is about 2 1/2 years from the date that you will receive them . If you keep them dark and cool , under 25C. , they will remain potent for that time .

Thank you Wedgwood. I did that and have them I was just looking for a way to prove this to my doc for the sake of science and in the event that Germany stops selling the B12 to us. ❤️

I’m quite sure that Germany won’t want to stop selling them to us . But any goods coming into UK by mail or courier will have to have a customs declaration on them and the value , from January 1st . as we will no longer have the advantages of the single market . Don’t know what UK customs will think about B12 ampoules . We will soon find out !

If you mean proof you need injections in general, then the only way (without stopping injections) is to find the cause of your deficiency. The Shilling test is not done anymore, which leaves intrinisic factor antibodies for PA. If positive it's PA, if negative is does not rule out PA. There are many causes, some can be tested. But if it's not diet-related (and not one of the few causes that can be resolved) you can assume PA. If you mean proof you need weekly or more injections? There is no test for that. If your MCV is high with injections/supps you need to test folate; if that is ok you might want to check your thyroid. If one of these is not good it might (partly) explain why you need so much B12.

Not what you're looking for?
