High MCV

Hi all,

Thank you for the responses to my last post, I now have injectable b12 arriving on Saturday and I can't wait to start.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help with another questipn - is it possible to have a b12 defiency with a good active b12 level? My active b12 is in the middle of the reference range but I had a low serum and a high MMA (1.9 vs 0-2.2 ref) a year ago. I am wondering because my MCV keeps creaping up and is now at 98. I am hoping the injectable b12 will lower and perhaps my oral supplement isn't getting to my cells hence the high mcv - however I'm worried it might not since my active b12 is now good. I do have hashimotos but it's under control with thyroxine.

Any input would be hugly appreciated.

Both your MCV and MMA in within range. Your Active B12 is within range. It doesn't sound like a B12 deficiency.

However, the injections will tell you is it is or not. The only gold standard for a B12 deficiency is to look for an improvement with injections.

Have you had injections before? There is a very small, but very real, possibility of an anaphylactic reaction. That's why it's recommended a first injection be done by a healthcare professional who has the knowledge and the equipment to treat a reaction.

Thanks for your response. My serum B12 did come back low (327 pmol which is deficient according to Thriva). My MMA was in range but at the very top of the range and my active B12 has been in range during supplementation. I guess it might not be B12 then, although I thought with the low serum and high(ish) MMA it might be causative. I haven't done B12 injections before but I have done injections for other reasons so I don't mind injecting myself. I guess as you say I will find out once I start the injections tomorrow.

327 pmol/L is not deficient. I don't know what test Thriva is using, but their 'normal' range doesn't match anybody else's.

That's weird as their test came back with a doctors note saying b22 was low and I needed to supplement.....

What Range did they give for their test?

You should have your first b12 injection in a medical setting!!!
