B12 or Prenious Anemia

I had my b12 tested and it was 152 low. I started my methycobal inj 12 days ago(7 inj till nw then will have one every week for a month) Also got anti nuclear antibody tested, came in negative, which includes intrinsic factor anti body. I am a uric acid patient for more than 10 years so most of the times was following vegan diet even stopped drinking milk. My symptoms have improved with no numbness or tingling for the last two days, only weakness/fatigue and weight loss. Whats the approx time for recovery?

Unfortunately it’s not possible to give you an estimate of your recovery time as each person is different.

It’s good news that you’re improving already though!

How can i tell my b12 deficiency is vegan diet related or malabsorption. Got all below test negative

Anti nuclear antibody test

Anti tissue glutaminase(celiac disease)

Thyroid test

The intrinsic factor antibody test is notoriously unreliable and is negative 40-60% of the time in positive cases.

So it’s possible that your B12d has been caused by malabsorption but the test did not show the antibodies.

In view of your vegan diet it’s also possible that your B12d is diet related.

Vegans can get PA.

So there is no way of knowing for certain what has caused your deficiency.

Vegans are no more, and no less, likely to get PA than anything else.

It's almost certain that your deficiency is caused by your diet.

The way to tell is to take the B12 injections for six months to get your levels up where they need to be. Then stop the injections and start taking B12 tablets daily. Wait another year, assuming you stay symptom-free, then check your B12 levels again. If they're still high then your deficiency was caused by your diet.

If your symptoms reappear then get B12 checked then.

As you have been on a vegan diet for 10 years , the most probable reason for your vitamin B12 deficiency is the vegan diet ., as vitamin B12 is only found in animal food . - meat fish , dairy products and eggs . If that is the case , a cheaper solution would be an oral supplementation. But even vegans can have Pernicious Anaemia - yes in spite of you having a negative outcome with the Intrinsic Factor Antibody test . Negative tests are about 50% inaccurate . But the injections should work well whatever the reasons for your B12 deficiency . Its too difficult to estimate how long your recovery will take , but it looks good that it has already started . We are all different, but the longer that you were deficient, the longer your recovery will take . It’s also advisable to make sure that you get plenty of Vitamin B9 . Called folate in food - green leafy vegetables , peas etc , and folic acid in tablet form ( a modest 400 mcg tablet would be good ) B12 and B9 work together . Best wishes .

I think ANA and ANCA tests are different from parrital cell and intrinsic factor tests. I tested negative for both ANA and AnCA but positive for parietal cell and intrinsic factor.

But the test report mentions anti parietal antibodies which means they must have checked this.

The problem started with stomach pain and diarrhea but its ok for the last 20 days now.

My rbc and cbc were normal only LFT was above normal which was due to colchicine (uric acid med). I was taking this tablet for 14 days before my stomach problem started on 25th march 2020.

What kind of symptoms you are facing?
