Multi vitamins

Hi All

I’ve read on here numerous times from people who know that high doses of b12 in tablet form are pointless as the body only absorbs a small proportion of the total and the rest becomes a waste product that the body expels.

I take a multi vitamin every day which gives 100% of ones daily requirement of a large number of vitamins including b12. Is there also a limit as to how much of the vitamins ones body absorbs thus creating a false security inasmuch as getting the level of vitamins advertised.

If they contain 100% of the daily amount then you should be absorbing almost all of the dose. Assuming, no absorption problems.

I certainly think it’s good to take a modest multi- vitamin and mineral tablet if you have Pernicious Anaemia. Having P.A. means that you have low/no stomach acid , ( Hypochlorhydria/ Achlorhydria) which is needed to break down food to enable absorption of vitamins and minerals . For P.A. patients , B12 can only be of use if administered by injection . Only an infinitesimal amount of B12 can be absorbed in tablet form by P.A. patients. ( in the ileum)

Hi Alfabeta,

Despite what people keep repeating on here, research indicates that around 2 out of 3 PA sufferers can benefit from high dose (1000 mcg+) of oral vitamin 12. This is approximately 400 times the normal daily requirement. Between 1-2% of this dose can be absorbed into the blood via unspecified means even by some people with PA.

I took 1000 mcg timed release Cyanocobalamin daily for 2 months and raised my B12 from around 80 to around 460. I do not have a PA diagnosis.

A daily multivitamin & mineral tablet is always a good idea.

Regards

Thank you budsa. I bought oral sprays but stopped using them because administrators said in some detail that they would not be absorbed. The same has been said on numerous occasions about tablets hence I went from large doses in one tablet to lower dose tablets throughout the day .

If your b12 level has risen taking tablets most people who know the facts on here will tell you that you cannot have PA. I am not having injections now because my surgery has stopped them and I am simply taking b12 tablets. I haven’t had any symptoms so far and it is 9 weeks since my last injections- many people on here cannot go several days without an injection without symptoms reappearing.

I bought an oral spray once, trying to top up between injections, but stopped because it just wasn't doing anything. Worth a try in desperation, because it can't hurt. Well a bit: it's expensive. No diagnosis yet, but it's only been 5 years ......>sigh<

No longer need to top up any more, as I'm doing my own injections -and can choose a frequency to keep me as symptom-free as possible.
