Fundic gland polyps

I have been diagnosed with B12 deficiency. I recently had an upper endoscopy in an effort to find out why. The gastroenterologist that did my procedure told me I had many small polyps, mostly in the fundus, but a few in the body of the stomach. Many biopsies were taken. The polyps are all fundic gland polyps, which are benign and quite common. When I looked up fundic gland polyps on the internet it told me that the fundic glands are tubular and the polyps grow up from these. It also said that on the sides of the fundic tubes are the parietal cells and intrinsic factor comes from these cells. If the fundic gland tube is filled with polyp, aren't the parietal cells squished/ crushed, preventing the intrinsic factor from getting out into the stomach, thus preventing B12 from being absorbed, or is atrophic gastritis the only way you can have pernicious anemia? Is my reasoning all mixed up.

No, the polyps, being small, will not push other cells aside. The polyps will also take up a small fraction of the area of the stomach wall.

Thank you fbirder. I should be able to take oral B12 then and not have to rely on shots, correct?

Did the gastro mention gastritis?

in reply to fbirder

He mentioned the area around the polyps being red, but he never used the word gastritis. In fact, I ask my primary GI doctor, at the follow up appointment about gastritis and she said the Gastro that did the procedure said I did not have Atrophic gastritis.
