Hi all,

I’ve just had a loading dose of six B12 injections and my magnesium level has plummeted, anyone heard of that happening? Thanks!

Yes, it is very common. Hoping that those who are better educated than I am will reply. Also, potassium often becomes depleted in the beginning of B12 injection treatments. I wouldn't have known about these issues had I not found the info on this site, my GP didn't tell me anything about these possibilities.

No, it's not at all common. Indeed, I've never heard of it happening.

Yes it can happen. But then again you may have been deficient to start with.

Hi Buster, I get checked monthly for magnesium, the level was just under 0.7 which is considered ok for me but I have had a loading dose of B12 over the last two weeks and magnesium has dropped to 0.53. I am at the moment in hospital having a ten hour infusion! I don’t absorbed due to ileostomy so have to have infusions, just wondered why it had dropped so quickly! Thanks for replying, take care!

Don't know if mine has ever been measured but I use Better You magnesium cream on arms and legs, have mineral salt baths and drink mineral water with high magnesium e.g. Badoit to try to keep it up.

You can get supplements too

Hi Leila, I have to have infusions when my magnesium drops as I don’t absorbed due to having an ileostomy! I was having infusions last year every week for a year, magnesium then stabilised but since having B12 loading dose it seems to have dropped again, just wondered if that was the cause, thanks for replying, take care!

I read somewhere ( Foodlog.nl) ........SecondOpinions tested bottled mineral waters. It mentioned the following...The water from Vichy in France is notorious for its amount of salt. The well-known sparkling mineral water San Pellegrino has a natural uranium content that is twice the sensible standard for toxicity. The slightly sweet-tasting French water Badoit contains no less than 6 times the supposedly sensible norm. Based on this, it is therefore possible not to call it suitable for daily consumption.

The English site SecondOpinions makes clear that, although natural water can be natural, it often also contains mineral values that naturally exceed the standards that are considered suitable for daily consumption. Lidl bottled water, came out best and cheapest.

Wow! I’ve way overdone that for years. What do you recall was rating for German Gerolsteiner? I live in California and filter everything out. Lots of good supplemental magnesium but with my water filtration need more than that.

Do you use a Berkey? I have one of those after I saw people using that in US

No osmosis multi stage.

Interesting. Never buy San Pellegrino as it is sold by Nestle, whose human rights track record is appalling. Of course I don't have Badoit daily either, that would be extremely expensive but since I can't really drink alcohol any more it is nice to have a water that tastes nice from time to time. I tend to rotate between all the sparkling waters, supermarket or otherwise and also have herbal tea with boiled tap water. I suspect with all these things the only sensible way is to spread the risk but good to know I've had my RDA of uranium this week! And I really don't think some salt is all that bad if you eat a fairly good diet of whole foods and on the whole I prefer salt, which the body does need (and having more potassium to use the B12 I would have thought a little more sodium was probably also required) to something sugary, which hits teeth, liver and turns to fat.

Would anyone be able to link to the article that referenced the brands?

That's both interesting, and worrying, as I have 4-weekly B12 injections. I also have Restless Leg Syndrome, which can be caused/aggravated by magnesium deficiency. I'd hate to think my B12 injections are causing my RLS! Does anyone know why or how B12 injections can cause magnesium deficiency?

Hi Chancery, don’t be concerned, I saw my GP this afternoon and asked the question, he said no, the B12 injections would not have caused the magnesium to drop! I also have RLS so it would have been a problem for me too but I have other things going on that might have caused the magnesium to drop so at least we don’t have to worry! Take care x
