Functional Doctor Recommendations - SW London

Hello,

I think I am B12 deficient based on symptoms, high MCV & family history. However, I haven't been properly tested as my doctor said to go ahead and take oral supplements before being tested. As per many of us they now all think I'm mad going on about B12 when in their eyes it's a normal level and it doesn't matter whether I've taken supplements or not. They won't investigate further and are not coming up with alternative diagnosis either. In fact as my symptoms are mild in their eyes they don't seem bothered at all.

I've paid for some injections and felt much better after my loading doses. I then had a tough two weeks and felt ill again this week. I had one injection this week, which I thought helped on the day, but I've gone rapidly downhill. I'd really like to have a medical professional work with me on this. I'm open to it being something else, but I have no trust in the NHS professionals I've seen.

Lots of people have talked about functional doctors and I'd like to see one. However, I saw one website for a functional doctor spouting the same old rubbish as the NHS does about B12. Does anyone have recommendations in London of someone who understands and will put time in to work out what is wrong? SW if possible, but willing to travel to central.

Thanks

Sue

Have you had blood tests to rule out other possibilities for your symptoms?

Three are good Nhs doctors it's finding g the one with the right background. It's difficult.

Most are trained within the NHS however.

I donr think it's allowed to personally recommend anyone

I think it's a matter of reading profiles and patient reviews

Unless PAS has a list of doctors with a special interest.

Yes and they all came back ‘normal’. From research I think folate & vit D are below optimum, so supplementing. Symptoms are less severe but still recurring and I’d like a professional who wants to work with me to make me feel normal again.

I know there are good NHS doctors out there, but it could take months to find one if at all! And generally they won’t take you out if catchment.

I’m lucky that family have offered to pay for private treatment so I thought it might be a quicker way to recover.

Yes . I couldn't wait the 14-16 wait for neurologist ti read my brain MRI. So paid. I do both .

Never dreamt I would though!

Hope you find the right doctor.

The private one was Nhs too as they often are but did extra private work and some retire and do it.

They all tend to have a 'special interest ' in medicine. It was by chance the one I saw was b12 defient himself ! So he was more informed than most. However chosen for treating headaches.

I wish you well.

You can personally recommend a doctor etc , as long as you do it by private message .

Thanks Wedgewood. I have found a local doctor but I would rather a recommendation of someone who understands. I have a free 15 minute consultation with this doctor on Friday so will quiz her on B12 to make sure she’s clued up

Could you let me know how you get on? My daughter lives SW18 and is being treated for B12 deficiency with investigations into ‘other’ causes other than IFA as this test came back negative. Getting 2 monthly top ups instead of 3 is proving problematic from the nurse administering the injections. Been referred to NHS gastroenterologist for other issues.... last one said IBS was causing the B12 deficiency, however, GP asked for 2nd opinion on daughter’s instruction as the bowel doesn’t absorb nutrients and GP also suspects other malabsorption cause. If you have success with someone in that area, GP or specialist the information would be greatly received.
