PA in children

Good morning!

Just a curiosity really,

I am diagnosed with PA and curently on a monthly injection with my GP (although i have to self inject after 2 weeks again because my symptoms come back).

My son, who is 11, seems to present a lot of the symptoms I have, including : being forgetfull, comes across as clumsy, even presents some autism traits-although he is not diagnosed, stomach aches, always tire, he is pale.. We did have some blood tests done and his b12 is 420. I was wondering if we should ask for further investigations as there is a history of PA in my family and I don't want him to suffer.

Many thanks, Alina

Sorry about all the questions -

Was the 420 an active b12 test or serum? - if it was the NHS & you don't know it probably serum?

Is your son taking any Vitamin b supplements?

Do either you or your son have any digestive issues or food intolerance/allergies?

Have either being tested for coeliac disease?

Also is it possible to have a friend/ your sons father can come with you to raise your concerns about your son just a precaution against munchausen by proxy (which is a risk if a mother has concerns due to ignorance and sexism)?

Hi.

Thanks for the reply.

I have been tested for coeliac disease and apparently I am fine. His b12 test was an NHS one...

He hasn't been tested for coeliac. But in the past 6 months he has been having what seems to me as lactose intolerance: everytime he has some cow milk he complaints about stomach pains and nausea. I( although before he was fine with it). We took cow's milk out of his diet and replaced it with plant ones an he is fine. I think I will go back to the GP and ask for more tests.

I don't even know what is the bottom values for b12 in children.

Take a look here for serum B12 values in children.

stichtingb12tekort.nl/weten...

It states "11-14 years: 284 - 355 pmol/L" or 384.82 - 481.03 ng/L. "These values are from a survey of 234 children in the age group 0-19 years in Nijmegen (95% Cl)." There are other values given that you may want to look at.

Other factors relating to method of test and machine used are also relevant of course. But this information may give you somewhere to start.

To convert to ng/L multiply by 1.355.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Autoimmune diseases are genetic so he is more likely to get PA or any autoimmune disorders such as celiac or diabetes type 1. So good to keep an eye on symptoms.
