Help with b12

Hi. I don't have anemia, just low in b12. My doctor recommended I take 1 shot a week for the next 10 weeks. I felt great after I got the injections at the surgery. I gave myself a shot on Thursday (today is Saturday) but it was my first time doing it myself and it was subcutaneous. I am not feeling any benefits. Is it safe to give myself an intra-muscular shot today?

Thanks in advance.

Perfectly safe. If your body doesn’t need it you will pee away the excess. But many people here inject daily. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Hidden are you in the U.K?

When found to have low B12 were your iron and Folate levels O.K?

Having Hashimoto's puts you at an increased risk of developing a Vitamin B12 deficiency and it may be advisable for you to consider supplementing permanently - check with your doctor.

As others have said above you cannot "overdose" on B12.

I am not a medically trained person but have had P.A. (just one of the causes of B12 deficiency) for over 47 years.

I wish you well.

Use a logbook to track your symptoms. You may see new ones show up like a headache or bowel issues. Eventually you may feel like a hangover and not want to get out of bed but sleep doesn’t help. These can show up as the other B vitamins, minerals and folate get consumed by metabolism in overdrive from the B12.

You may need to supplement with folic acid and a daily multivitamin.

Symptoms from the repair of any undetected neurological damage are counterintuitive at first and need monitoring over months so measure your own severity score daily for each symptom and record it in your logbook. Things initially seem to get worse and last 3-4 days as the brain recalibrates to the stronger signals on the repaired nerves.

Stick to an injection regime, like weekly, to eliminate one variable. Otherwise you waste it as your body pees it away.

Be aware that you may not see improvements on a day-to-day basis.

Provide a list of all your symptoms to your GP at each visit. This becomes the evidence he/she is looking for so further blood tests are not needed as they only confuse and tempt the GP to say “your healed” and withdraw the B12 prescription.
