Glass Particles from Ampoules

What level of concern should I have when using B12 from single dose, glass ampoules for SI? I inject subcutaneously (28g needle) and am wondering if I am inadvertently injecting glass into my system. Thoughts?

Of course it is possible to draw up tiny particles.from an opened ampoule , but it’s very rare . Breaking the ampoules correctly helps against this (google for info .) An ampoule opening device is also helpful . ( obtainable on Amazon.uk ) There are also filter needles available from Medisave .(. Cost — £21.00 for 100)

While it's not impossible, there is minimal risk of getting glass shards up a 28G needle.

If you think of the millions of ampoules that are used across the health services in the world and then mostly through much bigger 23G needles, if there was a problem with it they would have been withdrawn.

On the other hand, thousands of people end up with glass (and other fragments) imbedded in them in road traffic accidents and these bits rarely cause a problem - usually over the years they harmlessly work their way to the surface and come out with a scab.

It's definitely not going to put me off doing my life-saving jabs!

I totally agree deniseinmilden . But some people get really worried and wound up about it , so it’s good for them to know they can get round the problem .

I can understand their thinking - it sounds terrible, doesn't it! In reality it's fine.

Filter needles would stop your worry. I am also a health visitor/nurse and feel happy the risk is so minimal, I don't worry or even buy filter needles myself. I use blue needles. X
