B12 testing

Went to see the Dr today regarding my loss of balance. Whilst there I told him I've been taking 5mg of sublingual b12 daily for a month and my symptoms have improved. (Mainly Numbness, tingling and fatigue) He seemed interested that the b12 had made me feel better and arranged for more bloods. On the request form it says b12 - (peripheral neuropathy) and serum folate among others FBC etc. I'm assuming as the b12 doesn't say serum it is active b12 he's testing for. Am I right? Thanks in advance.

Almost certainly serum B12. Otherwise it would probably ask for holotranscobalamin.

I would think with loss of balance the doctor would start loading dose. Now you've taken b12 the B12 blood results won't be correct? My blood form just said b12 and it was the serum blood test used first mainly in the UK. Looks like the reason has just been written for the test. So keep taking B12 if it's helping while the doctor gets their act together.

I went doctors this wk has am always tired to see if I could have my b12 injection more often!! Was told my b12 does not make you tired and you should have enough with every 12 wks injection.

So he said we go back to basics and do blood tests.. He thinks I may have sleep apena or diabetics!!! Am confused I put myself on patches which help. He told me stop.. Now I feel yuk again.. I felt like I was talking stupid to my doctor. When he says b12 does not make you tired and am not anemia..

Just shows how unbelievably ignorant your Dr is, doesn't it!

"If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck and swims on the pond a Dr will say it must be something else and needs antidepressants!". Grrrrr!

The main symptom of B12 deficiency is fatigue!!!

Try a different Dr, consider self injecting, whatever it takes to get the extra B12 your body needs to be well.
