I want to get back into exercise following a few years of not doing much
Really want to lose some of this excess weight and get fit again
What’s the best way to go about it
Do people find they need extra shots when they start exercise?

No, no extra shots needed.
The clue is slow and steady. You’re recovering from a serious illness, so small steps are needed.
I found swimming a great exercise when I first started feeling able to do more than walk a few dozen metres.
But to tackle the weight you need to look at what you eat. There are many good reasons to exercise, but weight loss isn’t one. newscientist.com/article/mg...
I personally find that a lot of exercise can leave me feeling washed out and taking a little B12 at that point seems to help - however, I also seem to be at the very extreme end in terms of frequency for supplementing.
If you are starting exercise again after not doing much you really do need to start slow and build up steadily. There are a number of support forums on HU for people looking to increase exercise and loose weight and you may find joining one of these helps. I would also recommend talking to your GP or similar.
Hi Coachlady11 any exercise needs to be "self limiting" - in other words stop when your body tells you to not set times, weights, steps etc.
Personally I have found that a B12 Methylcobamalin Spray has helped me between my three weekly injections and I've had P.A. since 1972.
I wish you well
Yep ,I find if I excercise fully on it leaves me shattered and need lots of rest so rather counter productive and I have exercised considerably since age of 10 with no excessive exhausting effects until P.A took hold.
Sorry but have not found an answer to this. I couldnt access the newscientist article so am intrigued as to its recommendations. Personally I have always found exercise helps fat loss and improves shape and tone.
Have you had your thyroid checked ? Hypothyroidism will make weight loss whatever you do very difficult.
Yes I have hashimotos which doesn’t help
Had always been fit and active but fir the last 5 years or so have found it difficult but really want to get back into it
I haven't read the newscientist article- most of their material can only be accessed by subscription. However, I did ask a friend who has read the article about it last night. He said that they were reporting on studies that showed that people tend to vastly overestimate how many calories are burnt off in exercise. This means that the adjustments to diet if they stop exercising are often too little so the weight just piles back on. So I think the thrust is that looking to exercise on its own as a way of losing weight isn't enough - you need to look at diet and exercise together.
Personally I find that cutting carbohydrate rich foods like potato and substituting with lower carbohydrate vegetables can be effective in controlling my weight.
During initial loading doses in July I felt wonderful and for the first time in years was able to up my hill running from a slow and unsteady 3 miles to 7 and was able to run every day. 4 Days after the last shot I crashed and was wiped out for 2 months. Once I'd sorted treatment of bidaily shots I tried to keep the running up but found like Lesley12 the run/rest/recovery time became counter productive so decided to stop running.
Hoping that in time I'll be able to build up again, did manage a slow 3 miles today which I do every now and then for my mental health!
I've always eaten whatever I liked and run around 20 miles a week and been slim, not so much now...the extra weight I gained a couple of years ago will just not budge.
I have been able to build up my exercise after PA but my stamina is not great. I definitely don't have the reserves I had before being diagnosed. I have found that if I take short naps of just 5 -15 minutes after exercising, I recover very well. I do not need to fall completely asleep. When I get up I may need to jump around a bit to wake myself up fully. Sleeping a bit longer at night also helps. It is more difficult to exercise but it is definitely worth it!
I used to be a Competitive Body builder, was ok for sever years after diagnosis. then something changed, I cannot train as hard as I did. I just feel tired more often. I have gone from training 5-6 days a week to just 3. As for the weight loss, so long as you are in a calorie deficit you will lose weight. Apps like myfitness pal are great for tracking your food, so long as you are honest with yourself as to what you have eaten. My GP allowed me to go onto 2 monthly injections, did not make much difference, and my serum B12 levels are also high now, so they are reviewing it.
