Blood test fine but feel like I have anaemia

I've suffered from anaemia for many years but since the menopause 2 years ago my blood count and feratin levels have been ok for a few months I've been having the symptomsagain breathless extreme fatigue palpitations. I've just had a blood test and feratin levels done again and they've come back ok. I was sure it would be low as I feel so awful .I don't know what to do now.

This forum is for people with Pernicious Anaemia and other causes of a B12 deficiency.

Have you had your B12 and folate levels measured recently? A deficiency in either can result in an Anaemia that Is different from the iron-deficiency anaemia that You’ve had in the past. But the symptoms can be similar.

I haven't had the tests you mentioned .I had a look online and the symptoms I have sound like I could have one of the conditions you mention

Hi Ladybugg444 Iron deficiency Anaemia and Pernicious Anaemia (P.A,) are not the same thing.

Do you know if you have had your serum Vitamin B12 and serum Folate (B9) levels tested?

Symptoms of B12 deficiency tend to develop slowly and may not be recognised immediately. As the condition worsens, common symptoms include:

Weakness and fatigue

Light-headedness and dizziness

Palpitations and rapid heartbeat

Shortness of breath

A sore tongue that has a red, beefy appearance

Nausea or poor appetite

Weight loss

Diarrhoea

Yellowish tinge to the skin and eyes

If low levels of B12 remain for a long time, the condition also can lead to irreversible damage to nerve cells, which can cause the following symptoms:

Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet

Difficulty walking

Muscle weakness

Irritability

Memory loss

Dementia

I am not a medically trained person but I've had Pernicious Anaemia (one of many causes of B12 deficiency) for more than 46 years.

I wish you well.

B12 and Folate are not always included automatically in an FBC you may need to request them
