Still lost

Went to my Drs today and mentioned how tired I was after injection and asked about iron and folic acid, her reply was we only give iron to people that are pregnant and nothing about the folic acid so I am still lost. Could anyone please advise me what to buy to include them both please. Many thanks for reading and hope yous are well x

I’m stunned, i have been given folic acid and iron when I needed them by my doctor and I can assure you that at 70 years of age ai am not pregnant. If there is another doctor at your practise please go back. You need these supplements at the correct dosage and the correct length of time. So sorry to hear you are going through this. Good luck xx

Thank you Soulsister I was thinking the same she also said my blood pressure was normal I had been taken it for 2 days before appointment as I felt really unwell, all of the results said on the bus site that I was stage 1 hypertension yet she says they were normal readings and just that my pulse rate was a little high but the beata blockers I had to start would sort that out. I am starting to loose faith in her now. Hope you are well x

Hi Kittyjack Personally I have taken 1 – Folic Acid 400μg

and 1 – Iron Ferrous Fumarate 210mg tablets every day for more years than I can remember and both are available over the counter.

I too am not pregnant, not a medically trained person but I've had Pernicious Anaemia (a form of B12 deficiency) for more than 46 years and am still "clivealive" aged 77.

I wish you well

Why do doctors tell these stupid little lies? If one of her patients went to see her complaining of heavy periods and fatigue she would be given iron immediately.

My recommendation is Gentle Iron ( iron bisglycinate, 25 mg from Amazon) and folic acid (400 mcg a day from the supermarket).

Hope the supplements work for you, can’t do any harm. Always good advise from people on here. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. Hope you can also find a doctor at your surgery who has more sense than the one you have been seeing. Wishing you good health xx

It might be advisable to have your Ferritin ( stored Iron in the liver ) tested to check your level and if low in range - then a FULL Iron Profile would be advisable. Too much iron can be a problem as well as too little. Good to have a baseline result so further testing to monitor iron will be more meaningful. Taking VitC can aid iron absorption. You could also have your Folate and VitD tested at the same time. if your Doc is uncoperative then I suggest you order private Home Testing Kits from Blue Horizon or Medichecks - see link below ...

As you are suffering fatigue I am wondering if you have had your thyroid correctly checked - often just the TSH is tested and if in range people are told they are normal/fine/OK. Sadly the TSH is a small part of the thyroid story ... more info in the link above about Testing. Blood pressure issues can also be linked ...

I see you also suffer with fibro - this can also have a link with low thyroid - especially LOW T3 which is rarely if ever tested on the NHS and so people are missed ...

You are welcome. Happy to help. There is a Forum here on HU for thyroid - Thyroid UK. You could take a peep and read some of the posts - your story is a familiar one ...

I expect you know you are legally entitled to have copies of all your test results with ranges ( labs differ ) It is a good way of monitoring your own health and to check what has been missed. Surgeries should now have all records on-line so worth asking.

Wishing you well ...
