Concern for my daughter & grandchildren

My daughter, at my insistence, went to docs for blood test for folate & B12. Results came back 65/578. Doctors are being dismissive, despite the fact that I have PA & my granddaughter has been diagnosed as autistic. I know that the B12 looks ok, but can anyone tell me what it looks like with that folate level?

Assuming the folate is in ng/L then the range is 3-20 and your daughter’s level is way above the top of the range. Likewise the B12 is nowhere near low.

I’m not sure what your granddaughter’s autism has to do with your daughters B12 and folate status.

We were checking, as my condition is auto immune, that my daughter was OK. My grandchildren will be checked at the same time as they get their genetic testing for autism. There have been links found between B12 deficiency & autism. I am concerned as the folate level seems very high.

There are no reliable, repeatable studies that show low B12 causes autism.

I’m intrigued as to what genetic tests there are for autism.

Hi - must be nice to be so sure. Repeatable or reputable? I've read quite a lot linking low B12 and/or high folate with some autistic traits e.g. speech & communication delays. I don't know the exact details of the genetic testing - just that is offered by our health authority in conjunction with the NHS.

Repeatable. That’s the key point about scientific studies. They need to be repeatable. Otherwise you can get what looks like a correlation just by chance.

The only thing I could find about genetic testing by the NHS was this - nhs.uk/news/genetics-and-st... - high says that the work needs to be repeated. Mainly because it’s results were based on just 15 people.

B12 deficiency is sometimes misdiagnosed as autism.

If the folate at 65 (regardless of units) is not a typo and your daughter is not taking folate or folic acid supplements, it should be investigated further. At the very least the test should be repeated. That is what I would demand for a member of my family.

Thanks so much - GP told my daughter results are fine, but I thought folate was too high. Will ask them to retest & if it comes back the same, will get her referred to my haeomotologist. Thanks for links on autism etc - as I said, they are going to be tested in conjunction with genetic testing.
