Another interesting snippet on the 'Today' programme, this time from Professor Winston on discovering the importance of healthy vaginal bacteria in preventing premature births. He also speaks about the intensive interest and research now being shown by scientists in the biome and how, more and more, it is being found to be involved in many diseases and conditions:
"Your good bacteria control 85% of your immune system and your immune memory. Destroy the good guys and you destroy your immune system."
"They make your B vitamins; they make your vitamin K, they regulate your blood sugar and your oxygenating glutathione levels. They make serotonin, melatonin and short chain esters, which control your blood triglyceride (fat) levels and they make anti-inflammatory molecules which limit inflammation in your gut and then throughout your body."

Dear Old Hippocrates was oh so right - all those years ago - Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food !
When hubby was discharged from hospital recently with an anti-B prescription - I asked about Probiotics. Doc grabbed me by the arm and guided me to the Reception counter - where the very thick phone message pad was advertising a Probiotic by Uni-Pharma. He tore off a sheet and gave it to me - saying I was the very first to ask about them. Worrying Have this morning bought his second box and his 15 day Anti-biotic script is due to finish on Friday. No gut problems so far - thankfully .
Having had Crohns since I was 27 - I have managed well without harmful meds - diet is my main focus. Now heading towards 72 and .... the pool for a swim - tiz hot !
