Could it be B12 deficiency the cause?

Hi everyone! This is my fist post here (I am opening this as a new post as suggested) and I am compelled to do this because this year was the worst for me. I am struggling with IBS for years now and this may lead to b12d for me too even at the last testing the level was 217 pg/mL (range is 193 - 982) and in may it was 287. Also vitamin D is 14.68 ng/ml (way lower than a normal above 30).Folic acid is 5.43 ng/ml (range 3 - 17) and ferritin is 148.44 ng/mL (pretty good I say). Serum iron level is slightly increased. So my problem is a general disturbance in digestive system (stomach ache, colon cramps) also pain in pelvic region (bladder, prostate, urethra). Weak, muscles, pain in lower legs and mostly a disturbing dizziness in my head, pain and kind of weight at the back of my head (especially when working on something). And flushes of heat and sweats!!! I have a strange sweet taste in my mouth for months now and the doctors don't know why (no diabetes, so maybe is Glossitis - geographic tongue??) sore throat and cough sometimes (irritated trachea also...) Other disturbing symptom: frequent urination - 2 times an hour(like water is not staying for long in my body). And of course...anxiety (taking Anxiar each day). Do you think the B12 deficiency can cause all that and the shots can be a solution for me?

Doctors say I have food intolerances and allergies so I am taking supplements with B12 and lactobacillus and other minerals for a week now, but it seems worse. The pain in lower abdomen is worse every day. And the dizziness too...

I think all those pains can be due to some neurological damage (maybe because of b12d). But I feel it from the belly button down (even in scrotum and rectum :( I remember I had a bout of this last year (when I was feeling a lot better) just before boarding a plane to go on vacation. It lasted for few hours. So the nervous system is to blame. But now it is present for so long and I am going desperate. Somebody said that I need a Dr. House :(

The neurological symptoms arise from a B12 deficiency (B12D).

The digestive issues could be the cause of the B12D.

Have you tried going gluten and dairy (casein protein) free? Sounds like you are taking some sort of dairy product.

Are you on any antacids? These can also lead to the B12D.

If the vagus nerve or the intestinal nerves are damaged from the B12D then you could have additional digestive issues.

It is a downward spiral of issues and nerve damage.

Has your folate level been tested?

Are you keeping a log book of food, meds, drink and symptoms? There is a 3-48 hour delay because the gut is involved so it can be difficult to isolate the cause for each symptom.

Are you supplementing with vitamins at all?

How does your gut react to orange juice or diluted vinegar?

Thank you for replying! I started a gluten/grain and casein free diet 2 weeks ago. Also I am taking some German supplements (Aminoplus immun, colon guard, Lactobact Omni FOS, DAOzym and Synerga). But so far no improvement. The internal pain seems to be worse. I like to hope it will be worse before better but...who knows. See folate level in my post --also somehow low but in range.I have taken PPI (Nexium) for about 6 months but I stopped for a month already because I am not convinced I have hyperacidity but when I drink a lemonade for instance I get some burning feeling in my stomach.

Frequent urination may deplete your Folate and this and B12 helps your iron to make red blood cells.

Take another look at Lactobact Omni FOS, is this dairy/casein free?

I think It's OK:

characteristics

:

Contains six selected bacterial cultures in a special and highly concentrated combination

contains vegan vitamin B12 from Chlorella algae and supports the immune system

Of course, free of animal protein, gluten, yeast, lactose and genetic engineering

2 capsules contain: 2.5 μg of vitamin B12 (100% of recommended daily allowance according to NRV)

Contains 6 selected bacteria cultures with a total bacterial count of 1 billion (1 x 109) CFU * per capsule:

Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus salivarius; * CFU = colony forming units

Hey,

Your symptoms could be linked to B12D. I had more than 50 symptoms, some are similar.

Maybe you could try the AMM test (in french Acide methylmalonique), it is used in France when level is low but apparently not deficient.

I think you should take B12 anyway as your level is low.

Watch out not to take it close to Chlorella (I am surprised in your product they claim chlorella contains B12, I always heard it contains something similar to B12 that prevent you from assimilating real B12).

Good luck :)

Hi,

Are you in UK?

I'm asking because patterns of b12 treatment vary from country to country. Some info below may not be applicable if you're not in UK.

Coeliac Disease

With gut issues, I wondered if you had been tested for Coeliac disease. Coeliac disease can lead to low B12 levels due to absorption problems in gut.

In UK, NICE guidelines recommend two tests are ordered for those with suspected Coeliac disease

1) tTG IgA (Tissue transglutaminase IgA)

2) Total IgA

My experience is that in UK, doctors don't always order the Total IgA test. This test is important because people with IgA deficiency will need alternative tests for Coeliac disease.

Wow, thank you for that amount of info! I am not from the UK. I am from Romania (and actually living in Romania :) I 've been tested for Coeliac disease...not my case. Not thyroid issues also. Only thing they found is IgE always elevated around 300. IgA secretor (from feces) was off the chart--almost 6000 ug/ml. So yes, I am trying to treat my colon problems but this pain in the lower abdomen, the flushes, the dizziness are caused there or from low absorption of vitamins and minerals...or both.

You don't need to be a celiac to have an issue with Gluten. Gluten intolerance is far more common than celiac disease.

Hi Lionel, glad to see you are getting lots of info support on here. Just to add Coeliac disease is notoriously difficult to test for accurately. So don't rely on any test. There are over 60 gluten proteins and they test for 2 ! The endoscopy test is no better either as intestines, are they 22feet long and so pot luck if they see the damaged area with the camera or take a sample biopsy from the damaged area. Even Professor Marsh now in 80's stated in interview that the test - known as the Marsh test! was never intended to be definitive - go by symptoms first. If have symptoms cut gluten and to be on the safe side especially until better cut all other grains out too, thats your cornflour too, prevalent in gluten free products.

Your intestines have to be totally seriously damaged before would definitely detect on endoscopy. My mum was dying of malnutrition at 50yrs old in hospital so they tested her for coeliac again (had previously ruled out) by that time so bad - showed up on test. Recovered on gluten free diet. My sister has had 3 negative tests over the years - her bloating literally makes her look 9 months pregnant. She is addicted to gluten products as most people are, so believes the negative tests - crazy! Gluten and WGA in bread/wheat flour is more addictive than heroin. People have it every meal and snack and the world economy is based on it too. Also Gluten is much more likely to cause an autoimmune attack the brain than the intestinal tract. And if med researchers had been able to as easily look into the brain as the intestines then coeliac would have been known as a disease of the brain. google you tube dr Tom O'Bryan - you will find lots of info.

his website the dr.com has tons of info especially how to heal a leaky gut. He is known as a world authority on gluten. He organised the Gluten Summit a few years ago and interviewed around 30 world experts - Fantastic info.

If you want a better test for gluten or any food cross reaction or any food intolerance - Cyrex labs. (US but last 3 yrs in London too/may be in Europe now - possibly Germany. V expensive tho, but accurate. Google their website to see what they can test for - give ideas to what to exclude initially from diet.

As just excluding gluten and all grains from diet (including wheat flour in sauces etc) Hidden gluten everywhere Anything with malt in the word - malt vinegar, malto dextrin, most chocolates sweets etc contain gluten. Read labels or only cook own food so you know what the ingredients are. Use cider vinegar (so from apples) unfiltered with the mother if possible in Romania

But per Dr Tom - if sensitive to gluten, even a tiny thumb nail piece of food with gluten in, will cause an autoimmune attack for up to six months. So don't be disheartened only been 2 weeks. And then you have to heal once not being attacked.

Also see Chris Kressers articles on GERD as they call in US - gastro issues. Usually Reflux/burning/heart burn is caused by too little stomach acid NOT too much. But have to gradually introduce tiny amounts of lemon juice /cider vinegar with meal to supply some acid but have to go very very easy at first because of all the damage that has occurred. Digestive enzymes with each meal also to help digest food. PPI's see what Chris Kresser says about and all functional nutritional medicine docs - will be the death of anyone taking/ even indegestion tablets/liquid - a big NO! I now always have juice of one lemon with my meal and cider vinegar to help digest. Dried mint in the vinegar with a little honey - so lovely mint sauce, I have with all meats. Vinegar on jacket potatoes with butter and himalayan salt makes taste like chips :) Full Lemon juice on greens or salad. But as said tiny amounts at first if any sign of burning. Needs to heal gradually

Never eat vegetable oils eg sunflower oil rapeseed oils basically no veg oils unless olive oil. Use olive oil cold - lots of, Butter and coconut oil. Get lots of coconut oil. Cook with coconut oil.

Also Dr Michael Ash - nutrition expert. Have a baked organic apple with peel on every day for 2 weeks minimum to heal the intestinal lining/leaky gut. I now have one most days as lunch as we are always breaching the lining even when healed. Core the apple and cut say into 8 chunks. put in pudding basin. handful of berries on top eg frozen blueberries, cranberries. Add a little grated organic biona creamed coconut - comes in a block. Makes the apple gooey and serve with melted dark chocolate 85% cocoa - delicious and all good for you. Take Care x

How long have you been on Anxiar for? Benzos aren't meant to be taken long term.

Yes, I heard that too. But I am taking those for almost 8 months now...trying to reduce to just 1/2 pill before sleep.
