Vitamin B12 fasciculation

Hello. I have some walking problems from 2 years( clumsy walking, wide based gait, high lifting of legs). I also had tingling and numbness sometimes. Now Im having twitching, fasciculations from 4 months. Tingling, numbness, palpitations, constipation, burning sensation in right hand, chest pain, heavy and visible pulsation in different parts are other symptoms. After 3 months of no diagnosis, a different neurologist found vitamin B12 deficiency. It was 182(after i had 1500 mcg tablets for 5 days as i started taking pills before diagnosis). I started injections and pills. Some symptoms such as tingling and constipation were cured instantly. But some major symptoms such as FASCICULATION, BRAIN FOG, pulsations seem rigid. How long should i be patient for these symptoms to resolve? Are there any other tests should I consider?

Hi Rhoads

It is not uncommon for some symptoms to appear to get worse before they get better as the B12 starts repairing the damage done to your nervous system and your brain starts getting multiple messages from part of the body it had "forgotten about" or lost contact with.

I sometimes liken it to a badly tuned radio on which you have turned the volume up high trying to catch the programme you want when all of a sudden the signal comes in loud and clear and the blast nearly deafens you.

A lot will depend on the severity and longevity of your B12 deficiency as to how long before there is no further improvement or recovery. Some symptoms will "disappear" quite quickly whereas others may take months or even years. There is no set timescale as we are all different.

If you can get to see a doctor please also ask him/her to check your Folate level as this and the B12 you are supplementing help your iron to make red blood cells and to function properly in your body.

There is a complex interaction between folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron. A deficiency of one may be "masked" by excess of another so the three must always be in balance.

I am not a medically trained person but have had Pernicious Anaemia (a form of B12 deficiency) for 46 years.

I wish you well

Thank you for the reply. My folic acid level was 10. Can fasciculation and brain fog be symptoms of B12 deficiency?Im bit stressed as well because of the symptoms.

Folate and iron are needed when injecting b12.

Additionally, if you have inflamation your ferritin levels need to be higher...above 100 from what ive read.

Hi,

I found these b12 books useful.

"What You Need to Know About Pernicious Anaemia and Vitamin B12 Deficiency" by Martyn Hooper (UK author).

"Could it Be B12; An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses" by Sally Pacholok and JJ. Stuart (USA authors)

Hi, when did you start taking your pills?

I have been taking 2000 mcg pills daily for 3 and a half week now, some symptoms are getting better (anxiety, fatigue, tingling), some others are still there (muscular and joint pain). Looks like it takes plenty of time!

I started taking pills a month ago. Yes it is taking plenty of time.

How much was your B12 level?

And what were your symptoms?

It was 138 before I started taking pills.

I was seriously lacking of B12 for 10 months following pregnancy and miscarriage (strong fatigue, joint and muscular pain almost everywhere, strong anxiety with panic attacks and derealization, depression, tinnitus, sore throat, bad immune system, tinglings, numbness, etc.). I had over 50 symptoms ;)

First symptoms probably started 4 years ago when I had my daughter (fatigue and back pain), but I am still not sure whether it came from B12 deficiency or not.

I have the feeling the last symptoms to appear may be the first ones to get better.

And you?

Good luck!

Its good to hear you progressing. Yaa might be some minor symptoms to appear last may be cured instantly. But not the major ones.In my case, I think it will take months. If you have joint pain then be careful about vitamin D,uric acid as well.

I think it will take months too, we must be patient! ;)

I took vitamin D yesterday following your message.

I have nausea and headache for a few days and do not know if it comes from my cold or B12 supplementation...
