Approach to low B12

Results suggest normal intrinsic factor but B12 levels have been falling to below normal over a period of 4 years. My symptoms have been extreme exhaustion, muscle fatigue and involuntary contractions and twitches in legs. I also have tinnitus and occasionally very sharp darting pains in legs not associated with a nerve problem. Muscle weakness has been pronounced in my thighs. What approach do you suggest when I meet my GP to discuss this? Can I be certain that the diagnosis is not PA, but a gut absorption problem unrelated to intrinsic factor? Scans rule out MS and other CNS problems. Many thanks for any suggestions in advance.

If your B12 levels have been below the normal range for 4 years then I have one suggestion for your next meeting with your GP.

Stand 3 inches from their ear and yell, at the top of your voice, "Fix my bloody B12".

OK, maybe not.

But you should insist that it is treated. And insist that it is treated with a course of injections (every other day until no further improvement in symptoms, then once every 8 weeks - is the recommended regimen for those with neurological symptoms).

It matters not one jot what the cause is, unless you are vegan or a habitual abuser of laughing gas. The treatment is the same.
