Can anyone help me with this problem l never seem to be really hungry and any time I do feel hungry I find it very difficult to find anything that I fancy I am to the point I am really making myself eat at least 2 good meals a day

I know exactly what you mean. I find myself forcing a meal down, because I know I must eat, but I really don't fancy it. I cook a meal for everyone, they wolf it down and I'm just slowly nibbling it and pushing it around the plate. I usually end up putting most of it in the fridge and picking at it through the evening until it's gone.

I also forget to eat if I'm on my own, because I'm not hungry, so I try to set an alarm for lunch, so I at least remind myself to grab something. I'm right at the bottom of the weight/height ratio, so can't afford to lose any weight, so have to be rather stern with myself.

I don't know - mine is too high, which really doesn't help you.

Before assuming this is B12, Folate deficiency etc it is important to see a doctor to check there is nothing else going on. How old are you? Do you have any other symptoms? Are you sleeping well? Are you under a lot of stress? Do you feel anxious or depressed? How long have you had these symptoms? Have you always been a poor eater and underweight or is this something quite new? Do you have lots of energy or are you exhausted all the time.

Hopefully the doctor should carry out any appropriate investigations and refer you to a consultant unless he can provide a plausible explanation.

It is not safe to assume that this is a deficiency syndrome unless it is properly diagnosed and other conditions are excluded.

It would be sensible to think about these questions and jot down anything else that comes to mind and take it with you to the doctor so you don't get flummoxed and forget what could be an important clue.

Don't be fobbed off with a cursory dismissal of your symptoms, like "it's your age" "there's a lot of it about." This is important and it's about your health and well being.

In the meantime try not to stress about the eating too much. This i know is almost impossible but it will probably make it even worse. Take control of sorting out the reason for the problem with medical help.

Good luck. I really hope you get the attention you need.

I had low folic acid to start with but now it has gone up and is above the reference, but the appetite has not changed. I have no idea unfortunately

I was the same before being diagnosed with low folate and B12. I would open the fridge, the freezer, the cupboards constantly looking for something that I might fancy to eat! When I did find 'something' I would pick at it and then usually give it the dogs!

My appetite has got better, I seem to be more hungry in the mornings so I always have a good breakfast now, which sets me up for the day. At one time I could never face anything in the morning!

So maybe it could be low folate, mine is fine now, but it was quite low.

Thank u for your reply did you find that your weight stayed the same I feel for all I eat l should have lost weight but no would nearly put it on

Eventually I did. People commented how good I looked, but I actually felt bloody awful. Digestive problems, tiredness, palpitations to name a few!

I have put most back on now (lost about a stone) and I am feeling like eating now. Even though I don't eat a lot I am still classed as 'over weight'!

Mum, aunt and nana all have under active Thyroid, I have symptoms but as NHS only test TSH, my blood work doesn't show it, so I'm not sure.

I used to make a big pan of chicken and vegetable soup and literary live off that! So not really sure how my folate became so low, lots of chopped spinach in it!

I have the same issue - never really feel hungry, only empty, and just don't fancy food much. I make myself eat of course, but have to force it down. I've lost nearly a stone in weight. I wonder if it's a digestive thing perhaps?

A low appetite probably is part of the gastric problem? I lost 25 pounds before PA was diagnosed. My doctor told me to find some way to eat or I would become anorexic. Ice cream is good! But mostly I just keep foods around that I can forage on, because appetite is never strong. But I no longer have neurological problems, so B12 injections have definitely helped. Hope you find a way to stay healthy.
