Supplements and blood results.

Hi,

I had blood tests back in 2015 that showed I had a very low B12 count. I injections every second day for 3 weeks then a blood test every 6 months to track how the count was sitting. My blood test from February showed that it was borderline normal (doctors words) but that they had done an extra test to see why the count was so low and said it was Pernicious Anemia. They aren't giving me injections again because they say it isn't bad enough but the count is still low.

Does anyone know the best supplements to take for B12? I've just got a B complex Vitamin but curious if there is anything better.

Thanks :)

You have a diagnosis of Pernicious Anaemia . You need INJECTIONS immediately . They will be for LIFE ! You cannot be cured of Pernicious Anaemia . You should have 6 loading injections over 2 weeks , then every 3 months if you have no neurological symptoms , If you have neurological symptoms , you should continue with injections every other day until there is no improvement , then every 2 months . Most PA patients only get help from injections . Sublingual B12 lozenges help some( but not me ) If you take them it will skew test results . The treatment for Pernicious Anaemia is for LIFE . Ask to see the diagnosis on your notes . Then ask for a print -out . If they refuse to treat your Pernicious Anaemia , you must take it to a higher authority and complain .

where are you based?

treatment for PA in terms of when injections are needed should not be determined by B12 serum results but on symptoms, this is even more true after treatment has started as the shots radically changes the conditions in which 'normal range' was determined so it no longer applies.

treatment protocols do vary from country to country. If you are UK based then you need to make sure your GP is aware of the current protocols. they can access them through the BNF but they can also be accessed here
