Hi ellafidler16 I assume your doctor has told you that your iron level is low - has he or she prescribed iron tablets for you to take?

Iron deficiency is quite common and is normally easily treated.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself? Do you eat plenty of meat, fish and dairy produce? How about green vegetables, rice, fruit, nuts etc are they part of your daily diet?

Yeah I do. I am not fussy at all I eat anything. Yes my doctor had prescription me with ferrous fumarate and I am going back this week hopefully to have a blood test. I find it hard to concentrate at school. And I feel absolutely shattered at midday so I want to fell asleep.

I doubt you are feeling as poorly as this but some of the symptoms of "severe" iron anaemia are as follows:

general fatigue.

weakness.

pale skin.

shortness of breath.

dizziness.

strange cravings to eat items that aren't food, such as dirt, ice, or clay.

a tingling or crawling feeling in the legs.

tongue swelling or soreness.

As I say I doubt you feel quite as bad as any of the above but now you are taking the iron pills you will begin to feel better - but it might take a few weeks.

You might ask to have your serum B12 and Folate levels to be checked as these help the iron to produce red blood cells.

I wish you all the very best. Please come back with the test results and let us know how you are getting on

It's still early days yet ellafidler16 but you will improve.

Don't forget to ask your doctor about your Vitamin B12 and Folate levels as these help your iron to make red blood cells.

Hi I to was diagnosed with iron levels 3 weeks ago and given iron tablets for 3 months. I felt very tired but I am beginning to feel little better. My gp told me to drink small glass of orange juice with meals to help absorb the iron. Good luck.

Hi, a friend had very low iron levels They were sent to have an infusion at there local hospital and then had follow up appointments, if your iron levels are very low you could discuss this with your dr.
