Are you supplimenting or getting b12 treatment?

No

Do you know if that's pmol/ml or pg or ng? Also what was the reference range ie 190/900 etc

A good idea would be to ask the doctor for a copy of your blood test results then take a pic of them, rub out your name and the doctors details then post them on here as a new post and re ask your question.

Its hard to see exactly how high your b12 is without knowing the range.

The admins will most likely be able to point you to research that answers your question.

Try not to worry though as it doesn't sound massively high and depending upon the measurement they used it could even actually be in range still.

Hi Kierra1234. Please can I just ask what prompted you to have your vitamin B12 levels tested? Did you think you had the symptoms of B12 deficiency only to discover that your levels may be high (it's,possible to have B12 deficency, even with very high levels of B12)?

Do you take any multivitamin tablets (these often contain B12, which you may have taken and not noticed).

Do,you drink any high energy drinks (these sometimes contain B12)?

Have you been diagnosed with any medical conditions?

It would also help us to better advise you if you could give us a little more information i.e. any symptoms etc.

Sorry for all the questions 🙃

In case you're wondering, these are the general reference ranges for B12:

Units for measuring B12 are:

133 - 675 pmol/L (picomole per litre)

200 - 900 pg/ml (picogram per litre)

180 - 914 ng/L (nanograms per litre)

Ranges are thereabouts due to different lab machines, machine calibration fluctuations and local 'determinations' of population statistical norms (for want of a better way of putting it). Understand variations can be quite wide - normal reference range for my serum B12 was quoted as 240 - 900 ng/L

👍

Hi I had a reading of 129 18 months ago and have been having injections every two weeks. My level is now 1,200. My doctor says that she finds patients often need to be above 1,000 to feel well. I certainly feel 'normal' for the first time in years.

High B12 in the absence of supplementation can be an early indicator of some problems (kidney/liver)

High levels in blood can also lead to a 'functional deficiency' - all the symptoms of B12 deficiency because cells aren't getting enough B12.

pernicious-anaemia-society....

Emphasis here is on can in both instances.

As Foggyme says would be useful to know why you had serum B12 tested.

People vary a lot in how much B12 they have in their blood and where they are healthy. The Range is only a guide. B12 isn't toxic.

High B12,

If the lab scale where you are is the same as here in the U.S., 1168 ng/l would mean you are super-endowed with B12 and don't have a thing to worry about. Why did someone order a B12 lab test for you anyway? It is usually only ordered if you have symptoms of deficiency...

As I have been led to understand it by the medical profession in the U.S., there is no such thing as "too much" B12 because any excess is rejected and ejected as liquid waste (what we call number 1).

I was diagnosed with PA 17 years ago and have been injecting B12 ever since. One doctor told me that if my serum test number ever went over 800 (on the ng/l scale) he would consider that I should stop injecting.

I've tested High for B12 for about 2 & 1/2 years. This is without supplementation. Results come back < 1426 pmol. I was referred to a Haematologist who tested me for huge amount of conditions. All came back clear. I am in good Heath. Apparently this is rarely seen.
