Injections for B12D don't end. You get them for life.

Start a logbook of symptoms. Memory loss is one of the neurological ones. The logbook will help remember things.

Hand a list of your neurological symptoms to your GP and ask him/her to include it in your record. He will treat you like a hypochondriac and try to treat you for anxiety (another symptom). Antidepressant medication doesn't help and may make matters worse.

We've all been thru this stage with our own GPs.

Worry and stress uses up lots of B12 so calm down please.

You need to determine the regime of injections and supplements that work for you. Further blood testing is a distraction.

Hi, thanks wat I meant was my loading dose finishes tomorrow . I have an appointment with a different GP in the practise as I remember the other GP told me couple yrs ago my red blood cells were becoming very large. Strange u say about the anti-depressant I take them everyday could these be contributing to the anger.

Thank you

Margie

margie70 if the anger and tearfulness came alongside the poor memory it is most likely because of the b12 and not from anxiety/depression, when i first went in complaining about lethargy, poor memory, really bad mood swings, forgetfulness, brain fog the doctor diagnosed me with depression without even checking my b12, i was put on anti-depressants which obviously doesn't treat b12 deficiency or P.A, i was sceptical at taking them as i've suffered anxiety in the past and i had none of the above symptoms (i've controlled my anxiety for 3 years now so i knew it wasn't that) and everyone i know who has had depression didn't have the same symptoms except for lethargy.

judging from the course of injections you've had it's safe to assume you're b12 levels we're low, from what people have told me and articles i've read there is no quick fix to treating low b12 and it's symptoms.

Ideally a level of 1500pg/ml is the level you should be at to treat neurological symptoms and that in itself can take some time to reach.

did your doctor say that they we're going to stop the injections of this one or suggest having them once every 3 months?

p.s

if you believe you don't have depression then maybe you shouldn't take the anti-depressants.

it's quite a common thing for b12 deficiency/P.A to be misdiagnosed and mistreated

Hi Nathan, yeh the tearfulness and very poor memory is new, last week I apparently did order my weekly Meds but I still have no recollection of this. It's embarrassing when ur on the phone talking to someone then can't remember something u use most day eg; dob. Or similar. I been on anti depressants for yrs and diagnosed with fibromyalgia bout 10 yrs ago , my loading dose finishes tomorrow then it's every 3 months I'm seeing a different dr tomorrow that I spoke to on Friday. Hopefully he will be more helpful.

Margie.

if you've been on the antidepressants for years and have recently started being treated for b12 deficiency then it's a no brainer really as to where the tearfulness and poor memory came from as these are symptoms of low b12.

with the poor memory there's loads of people including myself that have that as a symptom so hopefully it's somewhat reassuring (when mine all started i had a massive problem recalling information on the same day for example, i'd awake in the morning go down town to buy some things then in the afternoon i'd have no recollection of buying the things i did, if i tried remembering it would feel like a distant dream).

after the loading injections you should be feeling somewhat better but then again i've read that people that do have injections see the benefit for a short while before it reverting back pre-injection (that doesn't mean it'll stay that way)

all i can suggest really as i'm no doctor is to ask your gp tomorrow about pernicious anemia and possibly having a blood test to check if you have it or not (that's if it's not already been done and also better safe than sorry) take a good b12 tablet, (i get mine from amazon 5000mcg of methylcobalamin from jarrows), a good b12 complex and give it time, i've not long been diagnosed myself (2 months) but looking up symptoms i believe i may have had this for a few years (just not this bad so not really noticed it as much) and keep a log of your symptoms and write down daily if possible how you feel.

hope you feel better soon it just sucks that it seems to linger around so long seeing as it feels like it occurs overnight

Hi Margie if it does help depending on the anti depressant your on some are used to treat nerve pain. As most suffer with some kind of nerve pain with B12 def the anti depressants might not be a bad thing. I take 50mg of anatryptalin and could not survive without them. Sorry if spelling is bad they don't help with cognitive issues.

The PAS office should be open tomorrow, I did read that they have problems with the phone line at the moment but hopefully it should be fixed soon.

Perhaps the PAS could give you some useful info?

"the other GP told me couple yrs ago my red blood cells were becoming very large."

I have read that Macrocytosis (enlarged red blood cells) can be associated with B12 deficiency.

patient.info/doctor/pernici...

Do make sure that your folate levels are high enough to support the b12 you are receiving. My enlarged blood cells were definitely caused at least in part by folate levels below range. They should be in the top third of the range when you are on injections. Ask your doctor for a 4 month course of 5 mg folic acid.

Also, if you get a test for PA, please take the result with a pinch of salt if it comes back negative. It is a very unreliable test and there are many other causes of inability to absorb b12. My test 5 years ago was negative and I have been very ill with b12/folate deficiency. The most important thing is that you get proper treatment.
