Hi
I haven't had hip or knee pain but did have painful foot and toe cramps after diagnosis. It would happen every few minutes on a bad day. However I have found taking magnesium supplements really helps. I take it with something acidic like orange juice as I believe it needs an acid environment in the stomach to be absorbed. (tho' if I'm wrong somebody please correct me!) Cramp is also common in people who are dehydrated so make sure you are getting plenty of fluid.
Hope this helps

Although Mg is more soluble in an acidic environment it seems that the acidity of the stomach contents has no effect on the absorption of Mg - or Ca and Zn.

I guess that's because Mg is absorbed along the whole of the intestine, but mainly in the ileum. By the time stomach contents reach that far the pH is quite high (little acid) anyhow.
