No you wont get that from a gp. You will only get total folate test.

The MTHFR test is a genetic test. If you're in the US some doctors might be willing to order it, but it would not be done through the lab where they normally order bloodwork. Also, the cost of the test might not be covered by your insurance.

Most people get genetic testing done separately and pay for it out of pocket.

If you are in the US you can get a genetic test from 23andme. I've done this, it's a saliva test so easy to do at home.

It will take several weeks from the time you order the kit before you have your results. You can download your raw data and upload it to sites like GeneticGenie.com which analyzes MTHFR and other mutations and generates a report (it's free, donation requested).

It has been available directly in the UK for at least quite a few months now. You actually post the sample off (in its ready paid and addressed container) to the Netherlands. A while later you get told it has arrived in the USA/lab, then you get told the results are ready.

wally10,

Useful? Not yet.

Interesting? Yes. Too darned interesting. :-)

I have found a few things which might be relevant to my health when I get my head round them - and some very strong family inheritance interest.

It sounds interesting. Thank you fory your comments I will have a look into it for sure.

I think I will try the methylcobalamin b12 and see if I get an improvement first.

Thank you again for your helpful advice :-)
