Hi Everyone,

I am 50 years old and have Hashimotos, Pernicious anaemia and Vitiligo (lucky me!). My questions is what part of me are these nasty antibodies going to attack next? I have just got over the flu where I was bed ridden for 10 days so they're never attacking what they should!

Really sorry to hear that you have so much to contend with. Unfortunately auto-immune conditions do seem to be a bit like that.

I used to find that a virus would totally knock me out until I got my B12 levels right (lucky that that seems to be my only problem - though it does come with a huge bag of issues).

I'm afraid I can only express sympathy.

Hi Ollie,

Can only sympathise, have now gone onto antihistamine as I've got a horrid cough/ cold going on for over 4 weeks now. But its working the loradatide!! So hoping for you you will start to feel better soon, and yes it leaves you exhausted! You just have to give in and take it easy, recovery seems slower , but how much is also age dependent I will not be able to tell, autoimmune conditions do seem to make you more susseptable to other conditions sadly enough. What comes next only time will tell so make the most of now is how I see it.

Kind regards,

Marre.

I'm just wondering oIliehorse if your thyroid levels are optimal. Before I was optimally medicated years ago, I was having frequent bouts of really bad flu and only became fully well when my thyroid was suppressed and have never had flu since. I do also take Echinacea and Vit C whenever I start to feel any symptoms of a cold, etc.

My last test results were : TSH 0.01, Ft4 22.02. GP always tries to reduce thyroxine dose but I resist by saying I will take full responsibility, in writing if necessary. They seem to have little understanding of how low thyroid (and low B12) affects the immune system and every cell and organ. I was also able to come off medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. after optimal treatment.

'Understanding Thyroid Disorders', written by Dr Toft, is published in association with the BMA, so your GP might be more likely to take notice. An extract : "

"Typical results would be a fT of 24 pmol/l or TT4 of 140 nmol/l, and a TSH of 0.2 mU/l. In some patients, a sense of well being is achieved only when fT4 or TT4 is raised, for example 30 pmol/l or 170 nmol/1 and TSH low or undetectable. In this circumstance, it is essential that the T3 level in the blood is unequivocally normal in order to avoid hyperthyroidism."

This link, in case you haven't already seen it, refers to Dr Toft and was posted on the thyroid site recently :

I hope you feel better soon. Best wishes

Hi Polaris,

Thank you for your reply. Can I ask what Is optimal treatment?

I have been on thyroxine for 28 yrs with few problems, until 5 yrs ago when I was dx with Pernicious Anaemia. When I started on B12 injections it affected my thyroid, iron, folic acid and vit d, I now self inject 2 ml a week take folic acid vit d which has really helped but now I cannot get my thyroid right. my latest blood test is as follows, doctor did not do T3 and says I have to wait 3 months after lowering dose from 125 to 100 until he will test again

Tsh 0.12 mu/l (0.35 - 5.5) low

T4 21.2 pmol/l (10.0 - 19.8) high

I find all this really confusing and doctor thinks I m mad! he know s I self inject and wont have anything to do with it, every time I visit him its a battle. I will invest in the book thanks

Ollie
