St Johns wort and 5HTP raise serotonin levels. There is never enough serotonin in Parkinson patients.

slippy,

Most PWP probably are deficient in serotonin, but I think you have to be very careful. It's not too hard to get too much and too much can be dangerous. A couple years ago I bought some 5 HTP and have never opened it. Be cautious.

I tried 5 HTP. I generally read up on something new first, but for some reason did not read up on this. I'd ordered from Amazon and one morning, when I was taking my other supplements, I realized it had been sitting in my cupboard for two weeks unopened, so I opened the bottle and popped one. A few hours later, I developed a terrible stomachache and felt terrible. I googled and read, Do not take with levodopa. Can cause stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. I had that stomach ache for two days and it took about a week or so for my system to readjust and I felt better again. I think it threw off my whole dopamine/serotonin balance. When I asked the neurologist about it at my next visit, he said not enough was known about it but if it made me feel sick, not to take it. That's my cautionary tale. St. Johns Wort is tricky too, especially if you take blood thinners or other medication.
