Is mannitol a safe supplement to take, and does it have beneficial effects for the treatment of Parkinson’s?

Mannitol and Parkinsons
Is Mannitol safe? It is certainly approved as a safe foodstuff. I believe it may have side effects if you start on too high a dose, or if you are consistently taking too high a dose. It seems that up to 20g per day is generally below the laxative threshold, and up to 35g per day is considered safe. It is recommended that you start slowly, and gradually build up to the desired dose.
The side effects are abdominal pain, gas, and diarrhea.
To answer the second part of the question, will Mannitol help? My understanding is that nobody knows, but anecdotally it has helped some people. It certainly showed promise in the laboratory with fruit fly and mouse Parkinson models.
An internet crowd testing web site called Clinicrowd is taking registrations from PD patients who are interested in trying Mannitol. They do not supply the Mannitol, you have to buy that yourself, and you make your own decision on how you will dose yourself. Those who register will be asked to provide monthly feedback, and will have access to the ensuing world wide data as it becomes available. They will also have access to general information about Mannitol, dosing recommendations, forums, and recommendations about where to buy Mannitol.
So if you would like to try Mannitol, it would be helpful for you to register with Clinicrowd. That way, you are helping run a world wide trial to test it's effectiveness.

I'm about to order some and try it--a tbs in morning coffee I think is the dose...though I plan to find out for certain. It's just a sugar alcohol--in small doses it might be annoying (stomach troubles) but not dangerous. It's used in sugar free candy.
I've seen a few things online that suggest it's beneficial, so that's why I want to try it, probably for a couple months? But like you I'd love to see some others weigh in!
