I’ve lost 50 pounds since I’ve been diagnosed with CP. I’m only 90 pounds and I want to know if anybody knows how to gain some weight back especially if we’re supposed to have low fat.

Hi, Kirkski 👋 Do you know if you have EPI? Taking pancreatic enzymes may help:

I too have lost weight but not to that degree. I live in the Canary Islands so hopefully this will help you also. I told the surgeon when I saw him & he referred me to an endocrinologist who has prescribed me a drink called VITAL. I take it twice a day & within 3 weeks I gained 7 pounds. Please ask for help as you are too small. I know it is difficult on our low fat diet.

I’m sorry to hear that. Your profile says that you are 80 years old. How long have you been diagnosed with CP? The reason I ask is that you only lose weight with CP when the pancreas is damaged over many years.

I was diagnosed about two years ago but it had probably been going on for sometime because it took 18 months to find it. And they said that it was a mess so that tells me that it’s almost totally damaged except for small percent.

You should definitely be taking Creon with every meal and snacks. It helps with weight gain and pain reduction. You should also be seeing a nutritionist.

I do take Creon every meal and snacks.

I haven't lost any weight. I cannot take enzymes because I'm allergic to Pork. Try to keep to a low fat diet. I was a very occasional drinker and I have no alcohol now. Nosecco isn't bad

Hi Jackie1947, how long ago were you diagnosed? Im asking because you mentioned drinking which was my downfall. Did you drink for any period of time after being diagnosed?

I was diagnosed last March . The last time I had a drink was January on holiday. I was a lightweight anyway . Not touched alcohol since then.

Hey thanks for responding, so would it be fair to say that you drank occasionally for about 10 months after being diagnosed? Sorry for all the questions its just that I slipped up and started drinking again for a short while after diagnosis and Im extremely stressed out about the damage i may have done

Not a drop but I class myself anyway as a once in a blue moon drinker before being diagnosed. Even then I wouldn't drink in the daytime and a glass of wine at night so you see it was only on holiday. I'm not a great fan of alcohol never have been I won't even do that now. It's not something I think about. I have an auto immune disease and the theory is my immune system attacked my Pancreatis as it can do that to organs. My GP did an IgG4 blood test to see if I have pancreatic immune disorder. The result was negative.

what auto immune disease do you have? i'm new to chronic pancreatitis and my dr is running a lot of test for auto immune issues but we haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I have rheumatoid arthritis. I had the blood test to see if my pancreas problems were due to another auto immune disease as there is a link between the two. Not in my case

Forgive the facetious answer but just gazing at chocolate or cakes does it for me and 🧁xSue

I can't understand why I'm not losing weight? I can't be the only one

we’re you officially diagnosed?

Jackie1947 profile image
Jackie1947 in reply to Tisch2

Yes by a CT scan. Also I had a stool test for insufficient enzymes.

Me too!! My EPI test was only 15....so my pancreas totally shot but I've gained loads of weight by just stuffing my face.

Mine was 57 but I find my appetite has decreased. Could be shock of diagnosis.

What did the CT scan show?

Jackie1947 profile image
Jackie1947 in reply to Tisch2

Significant Pancreatis, significant diverticulor disease. A stool test came back insufficient pancreas enzymes. I only thought it was IBS playing up. All other tests negative.

First chat to dietician yesterday. First remark how are you getting on with the Creon 😂 doh I'm allergic to Pork. She's going to ask my Consultant, not yet had an appointment, to search for other meds available 🤞 Talked about food all good and alcohol. No problem I don't drink! She suggested multi vitamins as due to IBS I can't tolerate much fruit or veg. I'm still finding my feet and have cancelled a holiday for next month as travel insurance is tricky until I've seen consultant and a colonoscopy for newly diagnosed Diverticulor disease 🤦

Sorry for the late response.

It's difficult to balance trying to gain weight with trying to maintain healthy glucose levels.

I found that using "Muscle Milk", I was able to put on a few lbs. but it jacked up my glucose substantially, so I had to limit how much I use.

I lost 70 lbs. in 6 months, and since I've been on CREON (about 10 months now) I have gained back 6 lbs.! It's a sloooooowwww process.

CREON has done the trick for me. I've always had a great appetite, but now it seems as if I'm hungry all the time! I do what another poster said: "I just stuff my face"!!! 😁

Don't give up, you can do this! I wish you good health and the best of luck
