So, I'm still relatively young and up until just short of two weeks ago I've never suffered from persistent back pain. I have had office jobs that involve sitting for long periods and I also worked for a removals company (heavy lifting) without much problem. About 2 weeks ago though, I had just been for a run and was changing and then something caused severe pain in my upper back. Since then, it has been coming and going, but today, I have been sitting at a desk working and it is really hurting. It is like a dull, but shooting pain on the right side of my back, (now around the middle of my back).
Is there anything I can do to relieve the pain / top the problem (I've already been taking nurofen for back pain - a temporary fix)!!

Dear back pain sufferer, firstly try anti-inflamatory drug such as ibuprophin, or better fprm stomach diofenanic "voltro" no over the counter. along with paraceutamol up to 4 x daily try this for a week see if it releives you symptoms. I could just be a strained muscle Group the voltrol come over counter at 25mgs you can start on 75mg as a GP would give you.
other suggestions above are for after this fails !!! Phyios ? in my veiw and MRI/ CT are when you have been suffering for over a year.
Advise after inflamation goes down, start doing excerises to strenghten you upper back muscles to where they used to be i.e gentle neck and upper back strenghting what has happend is you have go from using these muscles to sitting in a chair all day. this weakens the muscles so the spine is more vunerable to stop this only gentle excerise don't go mad then also when sitting working get up ever ten min without fail stretch and walk around abit because the life syle has changed you must change to protect your body.
I am speaking to you as a disabled person up until i was 26, one facet joint injection destroyed my life so please lissen if you can avoid Dr's do because they will try thing without having to face the consquences. Sue
sounds to me that you have trapped a nerve in your back I to suffered with lower back pain but mine is caused by shear abuse when I was young. As a young man at the age of 15 I started as a drivers mate on a HGV with Drag Trailer this I did untill I passed my driving test then I went HGV driving this was a heavy hard job we were expected to load and unload bags of wheat at 2 cwt it was this that ruined my spine and I have got to live with it now. When I am sitting in the car or at home I use a Chiro Cushion which has a cut out at the back so as your spine is not being sat on, Thsi stops my pain ask your doctor he will know what I mean. You take care back pain is the only thing that I have wrong which is now a result of Abuse in my younger days it's ostio artheritis which is worse now and I suffer every day. The pain medication helps but it's still there Morphine helps but it's still thereTake Care go see your doctor
hi, when i went to the doctor,s and then i was sent to the phyisco , for a long time they worked. but i have been told that i should have been doing some light excersises to get my muscules stretched ect... and to keep changing movments, like sitting, standing, ect,, change and move my shoulder,s knees, because we don,t use all our muscules enough and they stiffen up. so get up and stretch once ad awhile.
This sounds that you have twisted, nipped orstreached a joint in the back, You will have problems for some time if you sit for long periods, if possible get out of your office chair and walk around, lift your arms and streatch both upwards and horizontaly from your body, You will be iirritating the coccis in the base of the spine , transmitted from where you have twisted yourself, also the back will most probably resting against a hard surface of your seat, also try and gently put you hands on hip and gently twist around left right these excercises wil assist your back in keeping it moving.
You will also require to see your doctor who may ask you to see a pysio just in case you have nipped or twisted a nerve That is why a dog streaches and turns its head from left and right to to exercise and streach the spine.
Man is one of the only animals that walks erect putting stress on the spine.
Remember you should now when lifting feet at ninety degrees close to lift keep back straight
arms close to your body, lift with your legs.
Best advice see your doctor, and do not sit for too long. Hope it settles.
timmeh85, sorry to hear about your current episode of back pain. There are several factors and causes of back pain and the information you have provided just skims the surface. In order to provide you with some advice, it would be good to answer the following questions: Can you touch the pain? does it hurt if you take a breathe in or out? what makes it worse? have the neurofen helped?
