gabapentin working but still have pain

Hi, I have now gone on to gabapentin, it is still early days yet, the gabapentin is controlling the nerve pain but i am struggling with the pain in the actual stump and wound, where they cut the bone, I can't take codeine, I have had as many discussions with my Gp in the last week regarding the pain, I am up to 2 x 300 mg a.m. and the same night time and 300 mg gabapentin in the middle of the day. What can I use for this stump/phantum pain? The codeine used to keep it at bay. I have got oramorph but I only have a couple of bottles a month. My Gp is scared that I will accidentally over dose.

Have you got a pain specialist involved or is it just the GP supporting you?

Hi, It is just the Gp right now but am speaking to my consultant on Monday, a pre-arranged call, Gp good but always a delay, can't be helped though.

I wonder if you could ask your consultant to refer you to the pain clinic. They may have other ideas for supporting you.

He has but it is a 12 to 14 month waiting list, I spoke to them a few weeks ago.

I am sorry to hear the wait is so long. It isn't fair, but I guess there isn't much we can do about these long waits. I wonder if they have a cancellation list?

I don't know, but yes it is a long wait, need to fill in the questionaire to send back but in a way it seems pointless.

Hi, thanks. I am beginning to wonder if there is something else going on because nothing seems to be helping with the spasms in my foot, it is like the tendons are spasming and it is very painful, like a kind of burning, as if somebody is squeezing my foot really hard, am on 600 mg gabapentin 3 times a day, taking oramorph and paracetamol and ibuprofen but nothing is helping, it is really horrible. just after I burnt my foot, I started getting pain, swelling in my foot and up my leg and this reminds me a bit like that but this is more severe and constant. I wonder if the Gp can give me something to relax the muscles and tendons? I can't keep ringing the Gp but need to do something. When I was in hospital a while back, sometime this year the doctor gave me something to calm things down a bit, can't remember what it was.

Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear that you are struggling so badly.

I’d ask your GP for Baclofen for muscle spasms, it’s reasonably good for taking away some of the spasms and you could also try Duloxetine for pain.

I’d drink tonic water as the quinine helps brilliantly with painful spasms. I have extensive cervical & lumbar spinal injuries and I’m in constant severe pain. I have awful lightening electric shock type pain in my legs & feet along with muscle spasms there too. I have regular shooting, burning nerve pain also in my legs & feet and all the symptoms affect my mobility greatly.

I also use a Tens machine for pain, even the spasms and it helps take the edge of it sometimes whilst also using Oramorph sparingly.

There’s also cold sprays & CBD cool roll ons that can help mask the pain.

I’ve been know to have two tens machines going with two leads on each on various areas of my legs and on the tops & soles of my feet - needs must.

Good luck,

Mitch

Hi Mitch, i think that is the drug the hospital gave me on one occasion, it seemed to help. The quinning sounds a good idea. What I am dealing with seems to be trivual compared to what others are going through, I am not in chronic pain but it is bad enough, I can't begin to understand what that is like. Thank you for your advice, I will speak to my gp and you take care.
