OSTEOARTHRITIS IN THE SPINE

I have osteoarthritis in the spine and it has made my spine very wear and I have trouble walking as I also have it in most of my joints.

But what I am wondering has anyone else suffered from this and will a physiotherapist or osteopath be able to help me.

I want to try to get back to normal if I can, or if is possible.

I am doing exercises to try to strengthen my back muscles.

Is there any advice to give please.

I don’t have your condition but have chronic severe sciatica. I usually manage this with exercises and medication. At the moment I am having a severe flare up and am going to an osteopath tomorrow for a series of sessions. Am hoping she can ease the pain and give me suggestions as how to help myself more.Over the years I have been to physios and not found them very helpful I’m afraid. I think they are good for someone with short term issues for example recovery after a broken bone, or operation or even a damaged muscle. I haven’t found for long term prolonged issues they really helped. Indeed last time I saw NHS physio about my back he was useless and did nothing apart from telling me how to lift heavy items 🤷‍♀️

Hello Bevvy, I too suffer with chronic sciatica pain. I have been seeing a pain doctor for 2 years. She had me get an X-ray and an MRI. The images indicated an issue with L5-S1. When I first saw her, she prescribed 5 mg Hydrocodone to be used as needed. For the first 1.5 years, she was giving me steroid injections and that helped for about 3-6 months. At one point, she showed me a device that they can surgically implant in your lower back area and it has wires that are used to produce a frequency that supposedly cancels out the pain signals coming from the nerves. I wasn't too crazy about getting that. Just recently I let her perform a procedure who's trademark name is Coolief. It's a radio frequency ablation on the two main nerves on each side of the spine. It definitely helped relieve a lot of that pinching feeling that you get from sciatica. It is supposed to last around 9 months.

Hi, I have arthritis in my spine and other joints too, im on multiple medication and go to chiropractor every fortnight. I do find that helps, maybe you can try that if you tell them what parts are sore they aim to ease the joints and soreness.

Thank you for your response. I get pain down my spine and also I feel constantly fatigued. I am not sure if the are related or not. This terrible I have. Thank you very much for your suggestions I take a look at that and see if these is one near me.

hi I have had osteoarthritis in my spine, knees, hands etc,I have been on so many different medications but I’m afraid that none seem that beneficial to me,at the moment . All though my physeo has suggested I go swimming in a warm pool hydrotherapy pool I have been before, and I really enjoyed that as you can do exercise s so much easier wishing you all the best

There is a tablet that that stops any further degradation of the bones. Can you do a lot of things. I go walking a lot and also bird watching. I am wondering if I can do any of these things ever again. Very depressing altogether. Sorry to hear of your predicament it is not easy is it. Thankfully my hands are fine but I do have bad knees and hips. Today for some reason my back feels good. I have been taking Ibuprofuran and that seems to be the best as it deals with inflammation as well as pain.

Yes swimming is the best because you need to strengthen the back muscles it is the muscles which hold up your back and so strengthen them will help you. All the bests Patricia

No such medication to stop any further bone degradation I’m sorry to say. I was diagnosed in 1197 at age 30 and had 22 orthopedic surgeries between 1997 and 2014 when I decided no more surgeries unless it was a life-threatening condition. Since developed stage 5 idiopathic peripheral neuropathy so I can no longer feel my feet or lower legs(most likely because I’ve had stage 4 CKD for 26 years). So I have no good news for you. I went down the heavy pain meds road and became addicted after taking them after every single of the other 21 operations. But they were managed by a GP not an orthopedic surgeon so I blame him. Went to a clinic to get off and had no issue once I had help so I use gabapentin 300mg daily and lost of ice and heat. It helps but I am constantly in pain only average about 2 hours of sleep a night. However, I still try to stay busy volunteering and that helps. Wish I had more encouragement but unfortunately OA is completely degenerative. I wish you luck!

First, you have to understand that there are many causes of back pain, but osteoarthritis is one of the most common. Although it is characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration, it highlights the pain, making it difficult to get up and walk. It is a degenerative disease, so it is irreversible. Pain may begin in any part of the waist but eventually become centralized in the lower and middle back. Chronic pain while sitting or standing and walking is a sign of osteoarthritis in the spine. This is not a severe condition and can be treated effectively and safely. Surgery may help with the pain, but not the disability. Improving posture is the first step to helping the patient regain normal function. A therapy program with a professional physiotherapist's(mytorontophysio.com/

) help is needed to help the patient recover fast.
