I’m waiting to see oasis pain clinic regarding my sacral iliac pain I just had my pain meds increased and wondered would this likely to be offered or do you you get offered it as a last resort?

Been under chiropractor for years but was made worst by a fall in the garden May 2018 and a car accident 2018

Got unbearable August this year and last Wednesday after chiropractor I was in more pain afterwards and that’s why I went to doctors Monday and saw a nurse practitioner who referred me to the oasis pain clinic and increased my pregablin I am also on codeine, and a separate paracetamol tablet I got oral morph (morphine) for bedtime and early hours I am 47 female and I suffer with a very low pain threshold - I Be interested to know the usual protocol- my dr has not diagnosed me with s I joint pain

What is oasis pain clinic?

It is the pain consultant at the clinic....as he is always an anaesthetist he will do them too

In Somerset it where you see specialist in those fields eg from my car accident the one who dealt with my dashboard knee injuries he referred me to physio he did say if it didn’t help after 8 weeks of physio then I could have steroid injections but I didn’t need them

The one dealing with my thumb injury advise me to use a splint and another session she gave me steroid injection and another at a later date ( they don’t have specialist equipment there)

This is done in rooms ( they hire) that they use in a dr surgery

If you need X-ray or scans etc your be referred to your local hospital to have these done

Ask your GP for an Xray on your spine. This will confirm any sij wear.

I see an osteopath for my sij...wouldn't go near a chiropractic

I had an mri last November and some xrays if spine because back pain and ? Caudia equine but they said it was ok

Bananas5 profile image
Bananas5 in reply toPurplecat45

Well if Xrays didn't show anything not sure how you can have pain in your sij?

I’m not sure they were looking for it then

It the chiro that said it was s I joint pain , lower back back , pain on the raise bits in buttocks left and right , pain in behind the hips , pain in the groin area and pain in the thighs back and front

When she checks me when standing I am not level and she used the wedges to correct it and acupuncture and malipiation

I’m just look online ways to help sacral iliac pain and the joint injection cane up and the facet joints

OK well the only way to be certain is an xray.

Thanks bananas5 I will ask for one when I have my appointment as I’m not sure how far the X-ray went down my spine when they did it last November

plus I didn’t realise any problems with a sacral iliac joint would show on one

I’m hoping if the chiropractor been saying it is sacral iliac joint pain all this time that they right and the person I see at the oasis pain clinic will agree after examining me fingers crossed

You can feel the spot yourself...the 2 dimples top of buttocks!! If there is any wear it will clearly show on Xray. Mine on my left side has a large gap where bone rubs on bone

I also have scoliosis which clearly showed on Xray but....it curves away from the worn sij which is medically impossible!!

I have kyphosis and lordosis

The two dimples are extremely painful, they feel more raised out in that area and she says either one is more forward than the other or they both are

She check me when I stand and when placing her hands on my hips she can tell insistently if one is out

She gets me to lay on my front and she presses a point down there and asks me to raise that leg up sometimes I can’t hardly raise it where on the other side I can raise it no problem

I don’t understand it on Wednesday when I saw her I explained on the left side of my spine down the bottom of it the outside of the spine going down was an extremely painful area where when she pressed I nearly jumped off the couch as painful ( it’s not the spine it the outside of it )

I think I need to read up more about the joint to understand it and see why these other areas are affected

I corrected above message the other leg I could raise

I added some more info

I was told to

Help it to do aqua aerobics and walk to strength the core to support it because the muscles and ligaments were weak

Thank you again for your information night

Typically a MRI is ordered by a doctor or NP to see where the pain is coming from. Then the doctor will order the SI Injection if that is truly the cause. It concerns me that you are prescribed narcotic without truly knowing what is wrong.

I had on going lower back pain which was diagnosis in 2011 as muscle and ligamentous pain and all mri scans X-rays that came back we’re fine but with a very low pain threshold I was put on zapain back them

My back got a lot worse from losing my balance on a raised garden bed and falling backwards on to a patio paving slabs in May 2018 and a car accident where someone drove into the front of and off side of my car July 2018 since then it’s got a lot worst

I was originally on morphine last year In April 2018 due to gallbladder pain and it was taken out in August because I had some left over the doctor said as it was helping when I was in agony he was happy for me to use it I been under a pain management team and because the gabapetine wasn’t working ( which the dr prescribe for me )they switch it to pregabalin which had been working until August this year where I had another bad flare up amongst the ongoing pain of the back pain / s I joint

Hi there, SI joint problems notoriously only show up very rarely on MRI’s. For it to show up at all though you need one of the pelvis as just a lumbar one won’t cover that. I have had a few and my pain specialist told me this. To see if it is the SI joint that is bothering you they will give an SI injection. If this helps but the pain comes back they may do an SI denervation which I had and helped a lot.

Thank you Emma2017 so do I need a X-ray of the pelvis and and lumbar rather than mri

I’m assuming the pain clinic will start with an X-ray

X-ray is cheap but you have no broken bones so won’t be appropriate in your case. MRI shows up all soft tissue etc as well so that’s the one needed. As you already have had one of the Lumbar you don’t need one there. For SI problems they usually order a pelvic MRI (but as I said a lot of them don’t show anything even though you have pain). The golden rule for SI evaluation is the injection. If it helps than if you are lucky it helps for a long time. But if it does not but it helps at least for a bit they know they have the right pain distributor and can then perform SI denervation (I had that and it helped a lot).

Hi I was offered sacro iliac injections fairly early in treatment, they weren't a last resort - I had many treatments and surgeries after that. I would go for it - they work differently in different people so I hope you get some pain relief from it
