I know we all have to take medication to help us but what is it doing to our bodies , myself I think it brought on ulcerative colitis as I had just started bleeding after starting naproxen a inflammatory drug, we can't be 100 per cent but we would try anything if we were told it could help you but it could work against us , just like your thoughts on this . More people I have spoke to have advised against taking meds. One of the main complaints is weight gain.

It's a catch 22 situation. I think we would do anything to lessen the pain.

Yes medication can solve the immediate problems, but unfortunately they can cause the dreaded side effects, sometimes not for many years down the line, I've had numerous health problems and between tablets and surgery I'm still here, it's a call we all have to make regarding our health for the here and now moment, the latest long term health condition is the one that's giving me the most problems, B12 deficiency, even though it's meant to be easy to treat, possibly brought on by long term stomach problems and taking omeprazole over several years, this condition causes numerous problems but trying to convince a doctor who does not understand these issues is another problem, I've had ulcerative colitis myself as a young man and that is a pretty disturbing condition, and it settled down with steroids and colifoam, I had attacks of various degrees, so my sympathy is with you on that one, even though I'm now having issues with rectal abscesses, and I've been told that this can be another source of colitis, even though I'm not getting any of the other symptoms that colitis causes, sometimes I feel I've been put on this planet for medical experiments lol, oh well not long before I have to take another tablet before bedtime, what joy, I wish you a speedy recovery, thanks.

Naproxen (and other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac) are very hard on the stomach. They can cause reflux (hi), ulcers, bleeding, etc. You should be prescribed something like omeprazole with them to help protect your stomach.

They can also cause kidney damage if taken for long periods, and it appears that they can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

I can't take them anymore, as they caused so much damage to my digestive system. :/

No idea whether they could have caused or contributed to your UC...

Hi Clive.

My medication caused Central Sleep Apnoea, which has now vanished since stopping the medication.

Zero testosterone level. Macrocytic Anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency, Folate deficiency & Pernicious Anemia. Also when tapering off, severe mental health problems. Thankfully, apart from the Pernicious Anemia, I have now returned to how I was before the problems started.

I cannot take naproxen due to stomach side effects, but if you read the details more deeply on this drug it is not advised for long term use and is not advised at all for asthmatics and the like as it worsens the breathing side of the illness, however chemist still prescribe it if doctor says so. Diclofenic is another drug not supposed to be used long term if you can find another drug its for the best, but remember the stronger drugs like tramadol can be addictive and difficult to come off after long term use. Cheap alternatives are herbal Tumeric , Boswillea ect but don't buy from phone predetors just trying to make a buck. Herbal creams do work I am using one called dynamint which is around the price of a prescription if bought on line, I find you need to apply it quite frequently to lessen the pain. Heat pads are quite cheap with no side effects, Theres no magical cure only finding a remedy for releif for yourself and it may require several different treatments for best result, including mindfullness tapes ect. Your soul is as important as your physical needs. Many people live with constant pain and survive not necessarily the life they would choose but their wisdom of knowledge of chronic pain & how to overcome it plays a vital part for future generations and researchers.

My UC flared up just lately, not sure if it is due to the meds though. Take ibuprofen but not regularly. The pregabalin and( tramadol )make me forgetful and angry much quicker than normal. Pregabalin caused weight gain that I am dealing with. Before that I tried amitriptyline but that was murder due to restless legs so had to stop that one. It’s difficult at times, you want to stop the meds and I am trying to reduce but it makes the nerve pain so much worse however I have managed to reduce it somewhat.

There are complementary routes whereby you can start to investigate over ways of handling your situation.

I get McTimony chiropractic on the NHS for my impossible to cure condition. I also engage with Alexander technique, T'ai Chi, meditatation and mindfulness as part of my treatment regime.

There are Buddhist groups near you which can teach you meditation and mindfulness. Meditation and mindfulness is good for self observation skills.

Walking meditation involves movement and helps enable unsticking of emotions.
