I've had DDD in 5 discs in my back for years now along with 2 in my neck.
Apart from the odd bad day in my neck, it's been mainly my back where the struggles have been.
A few months ago though, I started to get a sharp electric shock sensation in my neck & down my spine, followed by severe restricting pain until I moved my head quickly, my neck would crack & the pain & electric shock sensation would stop. This happens a couple of times per day.
I had an MRI scan just on my neck recently which showed bulging discs at C5 & C6 pressing on the nerve root, so my consultant at the pain clinic has referred me to a neck specialist.
Does anyone else have this & what options/procedures can I expect, if any?
My appointment maybe months away.
Thank you.

U mayb offered surgery but i would suggest a good osteo.
I have had pain in back to point of sometime not being able to move for about 3 years eventually i was given mri and i have 3 low bulging discs..
He sent me to a specialist which I was offered surgery( which he said was last choice) or pain med and clinic...
Not much choice
So i decided to do it myself.. i found a great osteo whom I see once a month now, at first it was every week but once everything is in alignment it just case of keeping it there.
Then i started doin yoga... which is amazing for me.. it keeps thing all flexible and moveing and pain at bay...
so i would try to find some answers or things that work for u as to tell truth ur options arent great on nhs.
Someone just told me there is a good Chiropractor local to me that I think I'll look into. I know there are some really good ones but also some not so good, so I'll do some research. I wasn't aware that was an option.
Don't think I'll go with any surgery & pain medication is deffinetly a no go from what happened to me before.
Yeh same here... i had a major anaphalaxsis shock to antibiotics about 6 years ago so my immune is bad so i try to stay away from any tablets as much as i can.
Yes a chiropractor is just a good .. i uses to see one but he retired so had to find someone else and i was lucky that someone suggested a good one literally 1/2 mile away from me so i walk down there and back. His wife is a pilates and yoga teacher so i go to her classes once a week to and i would say i am 85% better. Just as u said “ do ur homework on good ones”
My back went again on Sunday & I'm really struggling at moment but I know it will ease in next day or two.
I refuse to even take over the counter Cocodamol now. Strange you mention your immune system. I have Pernicious Anemia which is an autoimmune disease which was caused by many years of very high dose Opiates for my back. I wrote a very long story all about it on here somewhere.
Thanks for the advice. I just checked out my local Chiropractor who has been going 25 plus years & has loads of great reviews, so that's a good sign. I'll give them a ring 👍
Yeh defo, he sounds like he/she knows her stuff, when u find one there worth there weight in gold, i was so upset when my chiro retired but i got to admit the osteo i have now is actually better so it worked out for best for me.
I just really avoid taking anything coz im so scared how my body will react so i just try to do things naturally. Either with help from a professional or yoga and pilates... that helps keeps ur body stronger so ur less likely to have so many accidents.
It scarey when it just goes like that isnt it.... if u google “ bulging disc” exercises theres a few really good chiros, osteos and yoga teachers that have great sites on there that show u how u can put it back in place . Or at least help pain...
I do about 5 exercises every morning and night i swear by...
It gives the 5 main muscles I focused on using to their full potential as I slowly regained my natural range of movement by connecting with my Base-Line.
I have severe DDD in my lumbar spine and although my neck had always felt misaligned/crooked since my teens I've never had a scan of my neck ...
Could u also have RSD that may be making it all worse.?A good chiro or acupuncturist can maybe answer that.RSD is a burning pain n hurts like all heck. I have it and it feels like someone put a cigarette lighter on ur neck, back and etc. Either way.. u have been through ALOT Ritchie1268, so I hope u get the answers and treatment u need. Take care.
Thank you Hidden I didn't know what RSD was until you described it. But I do get that very often in the muscle between my neck & the top of both my shoulders (sorry I don't know what it's called) 😁 also like a hot knife in both shoulder blades & deep aching.
See both a McTimony chiropractor to deal with micro-cramps. Alexander teacher to help you become more aware of what you doing to cause the bulging discs.
I can developing a theory that the problem lies in bending the back and pulling in the front of the body when doing certain tasks. The solution is to work on bending using the hip joint only without bending the back and pulling in at the front.
The following youtube video may interest you. It shows a few things on posture and talks about a different way of moving.
I really do agree with John! I was in a bad way (4 months off work this year) with 2 bulging discs. Nerve pain etc. So depressed by it all. Now see a brilliant McTimoney chiropractor (thanks to John!) and I’m back at work and better than before. Within 3 sessions he had taken away the tail bone pain I had experienced for a year! I call him my miracle worker! You will honestly get there. I thought I’d have to give up work, as so bad. I take nothing for granted now!
