First surgery ever.....

Went in for a pelvic surgery as a healthy 51 year old (I take no meds and have perfect blood pressure) and ended up with Discitis and Osteomyelitis in my back. Other that my 3 day recovery in hospital, I eventually spent another 7 days in a different hospital 3 weeks after surgery. Now I am on week 5 of 6 weeks home with Picc line and administering my own antibiotics. The nerve pain is always to the lower left, but does travel across tailbone to right hip. NO one knows how i got the infections and did I mention the Strep I had in the incision in my pelvis and the UTI I had as well? I'm a very unhappy lady, being self employed has limited my ability to do my job and clients are going elsewhere. I'm a prisoner in my own home. And lets talk Dr. bills coming in...what a joke...So I ask....who would be at fault? What happened, went wrong during surgery? I get nothing, but trust me I am rattling some cages and will get to the bottom of it!

Hi

I really feel for you. It's disgusting that you've been left at home to just get on with it!! You go and rattle those cages!! Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

That is why they make you sign a consent form before your operation so they do not have to accept responsibility for their mistakes. Keep fighting and I hope you win xxx

I agree something has gone wrong and at least you need an explanation. We were just discussing this a few days ago that not all treatments turn out for best. So one is tempted to leave things alone but l like yourself had a straight forward operation in 1990 and was left in pain plus the indignity of peoples suggestion that the pain is physcological. I still have pain which is now being attributed to early wear & tear arthritis I could laugh if it was funny but after thirty years of it ,it is no longer funny. How will you manage your employment at home? apart from your health and varied pain problems. Take time to consider your options and how you manage the pain. You need time to recoup a little from the shock, Take care and every best wish.

Definitely sounds like less then sterile things happened during your surgery. It could be anything from a scalpel to somebody with a cold etc. You do sign but you do not sign for non sterile practices. I would definitely fight this case and for loss of earnings. Good luck.

Hugs and getwell wishes to you. The infection could have come from anywhere including your own body, its time to get well and fight the infection while seeking out the best doctors and care about your health first then the money worries. This would be a difficult case to prove unless its a strain of strep thats clearly a hospital induced strain. Then the hospital needs a sterility work over bc other patients will be at risk. Discuss with a malpractice law office in your area, they will advise your next step. Good luck and feel better!
