Pain and sphincter of oddi

I have terrible pain after eating....not heartburn....especially fatty foods I.e. chocolate. It all started when I had my gall bladder removed. MRI showed everything ok but I'm being referred to a gastroenterologist as was told it could be my sphincter of odd I. But I also have oesophagitis and gastritis for 4 years now and meds make no difference. It all feels inflamed. Has anyone here had sphincter of odd I pain ??

No.

But have you tried:

Gaviscon Advance

Sipping warm water with a little Bicarbonate of soda.

Zoton Fastab lansoprazole.

(For the Oesophagitis)

Hi yes I have, it’s awful. I had my gallbladder removed last July & have not been right since. It’s taken me a lot of gp visits for someone to actually listen to me & eventually referred to a consultant who diagnosed me with it. I had Botox treatment for it in March but it’s gradually wearing off & the pain is starting to return. I’m back tomorrow for a follow up & hope there is something else they can do It’s the worst thing I’ve ever had

Hi I'm waiting to see a gastronenterolist and the man whose referred me said it could be sphincter of oddim mine like you all got worse after gall bladder removed. Everything burns in side me. I'm glad they found your cause and really hope they can do something better than BOTOX.....the pain is horrendous...mines been going on for 4 years and I cry a lot. I'm 70 in UK. Thankyou so much for replying to me. I also have oesophagitis and gastritis

Hi, I totally feel your pain. It’s the worst pain I’ve ever experienced it’s so debilitating. It wakes me up in the mornings at least 3 times a week. I sweat & am sick with it too. The Botox really helped me, but it’s not a long term solution & they sometimes use it as a confirmation of the diagnosis. The fact that it worked for me even if only for a few weeks confirms that it is this. I will let you know when I’ve been tomorrow what the next plan of action is because I can’t go on with this for the rest of my life. I hope you don’t have to wait too long for your appointment & you get the answers you need but most importantly the treatment needed to fix this. I think I’m lucky as the consultant I see has a special interest in this so I hope he will fix me! I’ve battled for months trying to get the gp to listen to me, I even had to go to a&e at one point as I was in so much pain my partner called an ambulance, even there they dismissed it & said it was probably caused from the gas that they use to inflate your stomach for the gallbladder op! It’s awful. I’m in the uk & 42 x

Yes please let me know how it goes. I don't then think this is my sphincter as I don't sweat and don't feel sick but I do get the burning when I eat and can't eat chocolate, biscuits, cake, pizza etc. But it will burn even if I drink a cup of tea so it must be my oesophagitis and gastritis which gets all inflamed but the consultant whose referred me to the gastroenterologist did say it could be the s of I. Yes it's the worse pain ever and I've had to go on antidepressants as I've had it 4 years. Good luck you sound as if you've got a nice consultant. Please let me know what happens. Kind regards Linda

Hi Linda, it may be a combination of all of your issues & maybe sod too. See what they say. I go into a sweat as it’s so painful so I think its a kind of reaction that I have to the pain. Have you ever hurt yourself so much that you broke out into a sweat? It’s kind of like that but it does make me feel very sick when I get an “episode” of it. When I had my op I reacted to certain foods.for a while I could t eat anything bad, pizza, chocolate etc With no gallbladder some people just aren’t able to tolerate foods high in fat. I think some things trigger mine, I can’t eat fried food or anything greasy. I do get heartburn though & I think that is related. I hope you get some answers soon. X

I forgot to ask you what procedure did they do to you to find out it was the sphincter of oddi? It would help me to know. Was it an EUS or a scope of some sort? Linda

And are you able to eat chocolate and cakes biscuits cheese etc now as I can't?

Have you seen a dietitian and tried staying away from foods you know will cause you pain? And tired a different diet

basten profile image
basten in reply to Itsallinthehips

Yes I've cut out fatty foods and can't eat chocolate cheese pizzas cakes biscuits etc nor Spivey foods. It's very hard to avoid some fats especially if my children take me out for a meal. I usually go for veg fish chicken which doesn't seem so bad. I can't eat and feel fine then 2 to 3 hours later it can start burning. I'm having to cut out tea and coffee as they burn to....I just think it all gets inflamed inside me. It's so bad by p.m. so I don't eat in the day. Thankyou

It’s not just foods that bring it on, it can come on even when I haven’t eaten. It wakes me up a lot very early in the mornings. The muscle doesn’t open properly so bile & pancreatic juices back up which causes the pain.

Linda I don’t get a burning sensation it’s just an awful pain right in the centre of my abdomen & it feels like I’m being squeezed really tight. The consultant told me he thought it was that from what I was describing & the gallbladder removal makes it even more likely. I can’t take opiates codeine, morphine etc as that exacerbates it terribly which is also an indicator. I’m ok with chocolate, biscuits, cakes etc in moderation

. Cheese I’m not so sure about as that was a big trigger for me post op & I just avoid it now. I definitely couldn’t eat pizza.

I had an endoscopy to check there were no other issues & they did the Botox injection there & then. For a whole 5-6 weeks I felt “normal” again but it’s wearing off now & I can feel it starting to come back. I can completely understand you being on anti depressants after 4 years of that. It’s made me very miserable & I’m only 10 months in x

Hi Kara..it's meant so much to me talking to you and how you've described everything. I can't take opiates oral morph etc.....That made me double up screaming in gut pain, sick. I can't thank you enough for talking to me as I feel so alone. I've had an endoscope so it can't be my sphincter. I had pancreatitis in 2015 after my gallbladder op....cause unknown and an MRI recently and they said all ok. My kids are real fed up with it and are coming back to the doctors with me as I'm on my own and it isn't easy. I'm so sorry to hear it seems to be coming back again, so like I said please please let me know what happens to you. I'm sooo grateful to you. I still can't eat chocolate pizza cake etc !! X Linda

Ahh bless you, just to clarify though, they didn’t confirm it by the endoscopy, that was to check there were no other issues going on. I don’t think they can diagnose sod by endoscopy alone that would be too easy! There’s a special test/treatment for it but my consultant said he didn’t want to go straight for that as there is a slight risk of pancreatitis following the procedure. I have an issue which I have been told is quite rare with my liver you see which has been found incidentally during all of this so pancreatitis is not what I need! That is the reason I joined this site, looking for answers, support because I felt so alone with it. Only today did I come across this thread I didn’t know there were other subjects on here & I saw your post & thought wow someone else with it!

tThe pain from opiates is a huge trigger, so you may well have sod too. Your symptoms sound like mine only I seem to tolerate more foods than you but each case is different:

I hope I’ve put your mind at rest a little you can always private message me if that’s possible on here I’m always happy to talk x

I think the other test is called an ERCP

Hi are you seeing anyone again soon about SOD? I was just 're reading your messages to me. I don't know how to send you a private message. I've seen a GP and am waiting for another endoscope and still waiting to see a gastroenterologist but was referred 3 weeks ago and still no appointment yet. It's all so frustrating. I hope you didn't mind me asking you you can private message me if you know how. Best wishes Linda

Hi Kara ...Yes as I've had pancreatitis is not very nice and I think I know the procedure you're talking about which can cause it. I think it was an EUS I had in 2016 and I'm sure he said my sphincter was ok...can't remember. Whatever, it's been of great help this talking to you. I also have to go to a pain management clinic once every two months but they just listen and not solving my problems. I also have problems with my bowels being so constipated despite laxatives and am waiting to see a bowel consultant, so on top of everything else my little body seems to be in a mess ha ha. Sorry to hear about your liver. Good luck with your next appointment. Keep in touch. This is a good site Linda

I know this post is 4 years old but I need to ask if you found any solutions to your problem...I had my gallbladder out and still have stabbing pain under my rib cage on the right side and at times in my back and shoulder.. Depending on what meds I take and what I eat... Chocolate and coffee are no nos... If I eat anything other than whole foods I'm out of commission for undetermined amounts of time.. I'm wondering if a sphincterotomy is the answer as we're thinking is SOD ... Opiates do make the spasms worse but I can't take ibuprofen or Tylenol for my severe chronic back pain so there is limited options for me..I need help have you or anyone here had this procedure and if so will I be able to take my pain meds ever without added pain.. thanks
