Pins and Needles Sensation

Friends,

Need help in figuring out what my wife may be suffering from.

Since last 3-4 months she has these sensations in her body (mainly limbs) that she describes as pins & needles, burning/itching, feeling like insects are crawling (specially on her shoulder blade & upper back area).

She also explains of extreme fatigue and weakness.

The blood work shows Vitamin D Deficiency (level of 11) and high B12 (level of 2000 [she has been taking supplement B12 injections).

She also has very bad anxiety and switched from clonezepam to xanax (alprazolam) 3 months ago, which may not be helping. All these sensations get really worse when her anxiety peaks but somewhat calms down when the anaxiety does.

I am not looking for a diagnosis, but looking for any help and thoughts that can put us on the right path.

Thanks

Sounds like Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body. Your peripheral nervous system sends information from your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of your body.

Yep definitely sounds like a neuropathic condition, I suffer with PN, and all the words describe the classic symptoms, I described my feelings like I have little fish swimming through my veins, the burning and pins and needles are absolutely agony, I've been diagnosed over 6 years ago and getting treatment for this condition is minefield, so be prepared for a long road ahead to try and get some sort of "cure" nerve damage is so difficult to treat, so a healthy diet, no alcohol or smoking can cut down some of the onset of this condition, it can be caused by numerous factors so trying to work out what's happening can also possibly reduce any further damage, its not a guarantee that the nervous system will come back

"online", it's a horrible and very painful condition to have and it can cause bouts of depression, so be prepared for all eventualities, good luck for now.

Thats scary, but helpful. What treatment is working for you? The neurologist will do a nerve test after a month to try to figure out.

Can you please describe what helped or didnt help you as far as diagnosis and treatment is concerned?

I'm afraid to say I've been through the current prescriptions available and ultimately not a lot really helps, I have my main symptoms in my legs and feet, but get flare ups in my arm and and hands as well, I have lidocaine patches which numbs the calf muscles, I take mirtrazepine at night time to aid with sleep and take pregabalin one 300mg tablet twice daily and dyhracodeine pain killers, it's constant pain and even though I get physical tired I find sleep patterns can be not a normal sleeping pattern, so catching 40 winks is not unusual for me,nobody can understand the pain and it 24/7,i don't know how severe the symptoms are with your partner but if they are in the same as mine it's not a pleasant place to be, so utmost support will be required on your behalf, when I initially seen the specialist's I thought hey there's a tablet that can cure this, how wrong I was, and appointment after appointment and the glimpse of hope I had was gradually fading, so it's important not to get to "stressed" out as this is like turning on Blackpool illuminations and the condition really let's you know that your nervous system is in for a rude awakening, you should get plenty of support and messages from other folk on here, and some might give you a different view, and some folk respond to medication better than myself, we are all different and I hope that there is a Ray of hope on the horizon so I wish your partner some better news with the various tests ahead in the future, thanks

Hello theretoinktoink and partner,

By now you've probably had some time to see how your partner responds to treatment. Everybody is different even though we may all have pain; each processes it differently and some of us have tried a lot of different medications, alternative modalities and then some people do fine on plain ole Tylenol.

I'm just basing this on my experiences. I get the creepy crawly sensation, the severe burning sensations, itchiness, pins and needles, redness, swelling and today an electrical shocking sensation. I have had this 6 years. Apparently, periphereal neuropathy can also produce a type of numbness, so you don't feel anything. There are a lot of different diseases that can contribute to neuropathy. The biggest group of people that get it are people with diabetes. I don't have diabetes. Sometimes, there is no perfect fit; but I have lots of other issues, too. I will be going to a pain mangement clinic this month for first time.

Let us know, how its going... with your partner; ... thanks and best wishes... red eyes2
