Very painful

Take an anti-inflammatory medication as soon as possible.

Ice and elevate the joint.

Drink plenty of fluids (no alcohol or sweet sodas)

Relax; stress can aggravate gout.

I've read that bicarbonate soda gets rid of uric acid build up. also keep off of fizzy pop as that can be one cause of gout.

Is athrotech 50 recommended for gout? It isn't suggested for gout at drugs.com:

drugs.com/arthrotec.html

... and neither is its NSAID component Diclofenac.

... then again, neither is Ibuprofen, and Ibuprofen took my gout pain down from "killing me" to "bearable". Careful though, don't take Ibuprofen on top of other drugs without speaking to your GP.

I was prescribed Naproxen, which *is* recommended for gout at drugs.com, and it also maintained the pain at "bearable". Here's a report that suggests athrotech might actually cause gout in some patients (!):

ehealthme.com/ds/arthrotec/...

Anyway, if the pain is still "killing you", then surely it's worth trying something else, in consultation with your GP.

Bananas - note athrotech contains diclofenac, which is an NSAID, that is, it is an anti-inflammatory. Taking another anti-inflammatory (say Ibuprofen) on top could be dangerous. So do nothing without talking to your GP!

Coastwalker - where did you read about bicarbonate of soda? Is this science or an old wife's tale? Also, which fizzy pop? *Sugary* fizzy pop is a no-no in the nhs guidelines, but is sugar free fizzy pop? Anyway, not drinking fizzy pop is not going to deal with the immediate pain problem.
