I am 56 years old. The last couple of nights I have had severe pain near the top of my right buttock. When I get up in the morning it goes away quite quickly and I don't suffer all day. Then it has come back when I go to bed at night. This has happened for 2 nights running. Any ideas?

Right buttock pain
Check out piriformis syndrome or referred L2/ L3 nerve entrapment.
Do you have a big fat wallet in your right hip pocket by any chance?
Doesnt actually have to be big or fat!!!
Cheers.
I have also been experiencing the same severe pain at top of right buttock but only when I first wake up in the morning and it does go fairly quickly. A couple of weeks ago I put my lower back out (L4 and L5). After the acute back pain wore off this new pain in the right butt started. My physio said it is because I have been bracing the muscles to protect my lower back; the right cheek is where the sciatic nerve is. Whilst not being actual sciatica it is a pain related to the sciatic nerve. It seems to happen to me when I have been lying down for any period of time. I would recommend finding out some gentle exercises that will relieve the muscles around the sciatic nerve. Don't lie down for long periods of time in one position. Also, a good sports massage helps - eventually it will go away! I have suffered sciatica in the past and it just seems to flare up at random times. So in short - gentle exercise and massage.
I started getting pains in my buttocks especially in the mornings about a year ago. I had an MRI scan which revealed minor osteo-arthritis changes. The pain became unbearable but I found standard painkillers didn't work. I am now having traditional acupuncture - 10 sessions to date - and going swimming daily and the pain is now minimal. I think it important to tackle it sooner rather than later. Regards Wendy
Hi... would you say it's in the middle area between your hip and spine.? Just wondering if it might be your sacroiliac joint. That can play up at night. Best get it checked out.
You have Siatica go see a pain specialist and get an MRI good luck because it get worse, like you can't sleep, drive, walk, have a normal life. Hurry !!!
