Herniated disc: I hate this pain can't hardly... - Pain Concern
Herniated disc
Hi Neonlady - I'd be careful what you do at the gym if you have a herniated disc. I don't have this (at least I don't think I have) but I have had trapped nerves/sciatica, and I've recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my upper spine/neck, so I know about spine problems first hand. I fear that if you throw yourself too enthusiastically into some of the things they do in a gym you may make matters worse. For example, I wouldn't advise you to use an ordinary exercise bike - you'll need to only use a recumbent one which supports your back. Similarly, a horizontal rower could make things worse - they have equipment you can use as a vertical rower (ie. to do standing up) instead. Speak to the trainer there and make sure they understand your health problems and can advise you which equipment you should and shouldn't use.
You might be better with more gentle stretching exercises. For example, I do a regular pilates class (specifically for people with pain problems - they don't do floor exercises as we can't get up and down off the floor easily!) and this helps tremendously.
Yea I understand I told the trainer yesterday about my back so he showed me some real easy things to do like yoga might not be real bad or the hot tub I can do they also have a hydo massage bed n some machines that aren't too bad on my back
Yea it feels great n I'm trying to keep good posture lol
I think you're doing the right thing, gentle movement will stop you seizing up.
My nearest hydro-pool is 15 miles away, quite a trek to get to, but well worth it, I'd live in it if I could!
Hope you get some relief soon
Yea everyone says to do exercise so the back gets stronger so I'm trying
