Aortic aneurysm seems to have become a far more common problem. Either that, or there is more awareness of it. There is a screening programme for it, for men over a certain age. I don't know if its hereditary or not, but if anyone is worried it would be a good idea to talk to their doctor about it. The screening test is a really quick ultrasound.

The condition which causes the arteries to bulge is hereditary. This rears its head in men usually over 65

There are many factors involved in the causes of aortic aneurism, not all hereditary. Attention to blood pressure can help a great deal. It is always best to get advice form a qualified medical practitioner on issues like this. On this site, which is primarily about chronic pain, we tend to be able to offer support about our own experiences within that field.

The only way to set your mind at rest is not to look up the scare stories on the web but to get expert advice from your GP. I have just had my aorta replaced after they discovered that I had an aneurysm the size of a grapefruit. The surgeon told me that they have no evidence that it runs in families. Most aneurysms are not found. Mine was discovered after a routine angiogram. The only way to deal with medical stress is to get good information. If you look at the web stick to sites like the NHL Hope this helps.

It is hereditary, my aunt on my Mom's side died of one and my Mom had one but they found it and repaired it. My uncle on my Mom's side probably had one has well but back in the 70's when he passed they didn't know about thing's like that. If your son is thin he's better off. They can check for it now. Sorry for your loss!!! Hope this help's sweetheart. xxx Mitzi
