Burning itching under skin around hystrectomy scar at the 12th week after 2 sessions of chemo

I had an hystrectomy on 25th October. It was found i had fallopian tube cancer as my primary. It was found i also needed my appendix removed as the fallopian tube and appendix were stuck to the outer bowel. I started chemo (Carboplatin 6 sessions) on the 12th Dec. being the first one, and 3rd Jan being the second one. I have felt reasonably well (the feeling of wanting to be sick but haven,t having the helpt of anti sickness tablets. My question to anyone is in the last couple of days i have experienced a strange feeling under the skin around the scar area - burning bruised tingling feeling (not pain) has anyone else had this happen to them. I can only think it is the chemo working in the pelvic area as it should. I rang the hospital this morning and they weren,t sure. My oncologist doctor is on holiday this week and i dont know who to ask. Thanks Margaret.

Hi Margaret

I don't know if directly relevant but I have certainly felt the area of and under my scar have a slight intermittent burning sensation, and its sometimes v tender and almost painful, sometimes not. It went on through my IP cisplatin/ taxol treatments after the op at ens September, so not wildly different from your timeframe. My onc suggested this most likely down to nerves fixing themselves and said not to worry unless actively painful - that being the body's signal that there is something amiss. She said to ignore it if it happens once/for a single short period, to eliminate it being an intestinal twinge or happening, which we all get. That nerve fixing goes right in and down through layers.

I would guess you have to keep monitoring, and if concerned pester doc for a scan if it continues. They have a responsibility also to care for our peace of mind but we have to battle through the financial constraints... Let us know how things turn out?

Thanks Sue, Im sure its nothing but very grateful for your message, the fact it only started 2 days ago made me worry a bit. The feeling is exactly how you explained yours in every detail. My cousin is a retired sister and suggested it could be the nerve endings settling. My next chemo is next thursday 24th.

My primary was in my Fallopian tube as well. I had three chemos followed by hysterectomy including removal of appendix and omentum early September, then three more chemos. I have had dull achey pains throughout the whole process, and a slightly warm feeling in my lower abdomen.

Saw my surgeon last week and he thinks it is just scar tissue and the healing process which he says can take up to a year.

Thank you so much for answering me. I have found it extremely hard to find anyone else who has had the same operation as myself (Fallopian tube cancer) it seems very rare as the primary cause. Unlike yourself i started my Chemos on the 12th Dec. being the 1st one this was the 7th week after the hystrectomy and than healing i have only just started during the last couple of days experienced the prickle -burning - itching in lower abdoman that is why i am thinking it must be chemo. You have helped me a great deal to know you are also having the same feeling. My cousin is a retired RGN and she suggested to me it could be the nerve endings. My 3rd Chemo is next week 24th. not looking forward to that flippin cannula going in but that will be another one over eh! six in total. thanks again love Margaret x

I had my last operation on 17th October for a hysterectomy, and I get a sudden stinging sensation around the scar, although it has healed. I also have two very itchy patches of dry skin where I had previously had a pocket of fluid and it dispersed. I don't think it's related to the chemo, but the time since the operation, as I have had just one chemo treatment, which was January and I had this prior to starting.

Thank you very much for your reply. It has helped to put my mind at rest as i have had no joy with the Chemo team at the hospital. The nurse just said if it gets any worse see your doctor and yet the Oncologist told me i was now in her hands (she is away this week so cant ask) It is still prickling again today but im not in pain. love Margaret x

Hi a friend of mine had OC and some bowel involvement and during her chemo had tingling and pain around her scar and her onc told her it was a sign the chemo was active in the region of her surgery. I have had similar tingles and pains and believe this is due to the settling down of muscles and nerves and my nurse specialist told me that this can go one for well over a year. As a nurse I know that patients have many individual symptoms and we have to try and look at the individual patient and treat holistically as each symptom in isolation may be a red herring and nothing tone concerned about. Check with your oncologist when they come back from leave as they will have the full picture for you or your nurse specialist?

I have researched Fallopian tube cancer which apparently is not as rare as you would think because a lot of ovarian cancers apparently start in the Fallopian tubes.

If anyone else has any information on this subject I would be really interested to hear.

Thanks for your reply. The surgeon said the primary was in the fallopian tube (Right) involving right ovary. It is my daughter who researched this and found 400 patients in the whole of America were diagnosed last year. When i had the very first scan way back in July the lady scanner said my ovaries uterus were clear. The fact i needed an hyserectomy was because the fallopian tube and appendix had become twisted and stuck to my outer bowel which had caused the mass.

I'm surprised, as Macmillan told me that it usually spreads to the tubes to travel to the other ovary. My tube was clear on the biopsy.

Scar itching and stinging on the sites which are hysterectomies, not cancer sites, are really common as is some bleeding etc even at 16 weeks. So hope that helps.

My surgeon was also sup.prised too that the primary was definately the right fallopian tube and said it had involved the ovary, left ovary not mentioned but would imagine it would also be involved.

Scar itching and stinging is not such a problem as long as know what is causing it, and asked because it has only just started in the last few days.
