I have bulky ovaries and my ca125 level is 58/5... - My Ovacome
I have bulky ovaries and my ca125 level is 58/59. I am advised to have a total hysterectomy. Is it possible to have a biopsy first?
Hi
You don't say how old you are but unless fertility is an issue I would say have the hysterectomy and get it over with. It's a big op but you should find the pain is really well controlled and you'll make a good recovery. I'm now doing 2 good workouts a week including 100 sit-ups!
If you find you're getting overwhelmed with worry you'll find lots of support and tips on this site.
Good luck keep us posted.
Linda
Hi Linda,
Glad you are recovered well from your op. I am 60, so fertility is not an issue, it just seems such a big op to go through when there is nothing definite diagnosed.
I think I may have another blood test and ct scan to see if they find anything different next time.

Georgie
Hi Georgie
Welcome , but I'm so sorry that you are going through this.
I would certainly echo what Linda said. The operation is fine , you need to rest alot afterwards , but it's more than doable.
My understanding is that it is unwise to biopsy a troublesome ovary, as if it is anything horrible , it can burst and spread itself around. Doctors will generally have a good idea of what it is based on your CA125 level , their findings on examination, ultrasound results and your general health. However they cannot tell for certain untill it is removed and examined by a pathologist. I was told , at various times that I had a possible stage 4 cancer , then a cyst , then a cyst again and it turned out that I had a borderline tumour ! I am also fine.
Take care

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for your advice. I can now understand why they are not keen to do a biopsy but the consultant said there was a low risk of cancer so I don't want to go through such a big op for no reason.
I think I will monitor things for a few weeks and see if things change.
Georgie
Hi Georgie it is always possible but likely that is specialist thought there was a reason to proceed and not do biopsy first . You could ask if this is possible and the pros and cons which is what i may do . Surgery will take some time to recover , no lifting heavy stuff extra so enlist lots help and support for post op time
Best Wishes

A lot depends on your age. I would call the Ovacome health line and give them as many details as you can. They are open Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm on 0845 371 0554. They are trained specialist nurses who will give you the best advice.
Thanks, I think I will give them a call as I would like as much info as possible before I make the decision.
