How soon after surgery do you be told whether or not you have ovarian cancer?
Hi Geralyn
I understand that sometimes it can take weeks for the lab results to come back but that wasn't the case for me in Belfast City Hospital.
My operation was on a Friday and on the the Sunday they told me that the initial results were borderline but that the final results would take up to 2 weeks. In fact they came back on the Wednesday to tell me it was stage 1a clear cell so it wasn't such a long wait.
I guess every case and every hospital is different but it is important for them to do proper staging and grading before deciding on the next steps.
Hope all goes well for your mother and the wait for results isn't too long.
All the best
Linda
Hi Linda
Im going into the city hospital tomorrow for full pelvic clearence and removal of my spleen. I am glad to hear they came back to u so quickly with the results as I am finding the wait quite hard. The consultant said he would let me know on Friday whether he thinks I have oc just from observation but it would be a week before they have the lab results and a certain diagnosis.

Hello Jane
I do hope all goes well for you. It's a scary prospect but I did find the standard of care from both doctors and nurses in the city very good. Can't say I was overly impressed with the food though!
I had my first review today since finishing treatment. All seems well though of course I have to wait for ca125 results.
Anyway, all the best the op and the results and get in touch again once you're home and feel up to it.

in 2010, it took 3 weeks for my results to come back after laparoscopy, a long time to wait to find out I had stage OC.

Hi Geralyn
I was told after 10 days for my initial op (2009), but my most recent ( in march) gave me the results after 7 days. hope that helps.

Hi Geralyn,
I was told by the surgeon the next day after my op that it was very likely cancer, they often can tell by experience ...but would know for certain when they get the Histology results which was when I had my check up ( just under a month )
They then discussed their plans for further treatment chemo etc.
Hope all goes well best wishes x Gwyneth x
Hi Geralyn
I was told type, stage and grade 1 month after surgery. However , I asked on the day of the op how it looked, and he said it looked like cancer which had spread. I think he would have waited if I had not asked.Mine was 3c which had spread all round my abdomen. I think the lower stages would not be so obvious and definitely have to wait for the pathology report.
Not sure if it helped me to know straight away, treatment can't start for about a month anyway.
Hope the op goes well for your mum.

I was told by the surgeon before I had my hysterectomy that the scan indicated stage 3c - and he was right! He said the same the day after the operation and then I got the official confrimation a week later.
Hope all goes well for your Mum.

Hi All
Thanks for your replies. Mum goes throuigh her surgery on Tuesday. We are keeping everything crossed for a good outcome. The consultant said her bloods are fine, the ct scan only showed this very large cyst attached to her right ovary and there is no fluid at all in the abdomen. She has said that she intends to take the omentum as well at the initial operation as a precaution as she does not wish to operate a second time if there is malignancy there. However so far she advises that she is hopeful that this is benign.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts. Best wishes to you all.

I already knew I had cancer before surgery but I didn't know the grade and the stage. At the hospital where I had my surgery they have MDT every Wednesday afternoon so the Wednesday after my surgery I got a call from my CNS with the results of the pathology report and my oncologist at The Christie gave me a copy of the report.
For me, the surgeon told me I had cancer the next day after he had operated, but it took another 5 weeks (I think) over Christmas and New Year, for the oncologist to tell me what the stage and grade and further treatment was going to be.
