Did anyone have their appendix removed during debulking? If so, why? And what was the final diagnosis after your surgery?

Hi coop1969

This should have been discussed with you at your pre-surgery consultation and when you signed the consent form for your surgery.

An appendectomy is undertaken as a precautionary measure because it can be difficult to distinguish between primary mutinous ovarian cancer and secondary metastasis from a tumour starting in the appendix.

I had my appendix removed at age 10. I informed the consult of this at my pre-surgery consultation. She still asked me to agree to an appendectomy on the day of my surgery.

Hi

My mum had her appendix removed when she had her debulking surgery. She was informed prior. She has been asked to ensure all vaccinations are completed 3 months after chemo and requires lifelong antibiotics.

The consultant advised these are the guidelines in the U.K. However other countries do not advise lifelong antibiotics.

My mum is having two more cycles of carboplatin only. She has a black shadow present in her scans, and they are not certain what this is. So decided no avastin and a parp inhibitor only when chemo finished.

Good morning Coop1969.I had my appendix removed during ultra radical surgery ( debulking). This was after 4 carbo/taxol. There was NED after surgery. I went on to have 2 further carbo/taxol with the final treatment including Bev. I have completed 17 of 18 further Bev & my CA125 has remained at 7 for the last 12 months.

Sorry I dont actually don't know why my appendix was removed I was just so happy with the outcome of the surgery, that I never asked.

Hi coop

I had my appendix removed as part of my surgery - total hysterectomy, both ovaries, some omentum and a couple of lymph nodes - my surgeon told me it was because the appendix can be a hiding place for cancerous cells.

I was one diagnosed 1C after my surgery and had carbo/taxol afterwards to mop up some cancerous cells they found in my cavity washings.

All the best

Janine

Hi there - I also had my appendix removed at my debulking, also all lady bits, some omentum, some peritoneum, some bowel (left with a stoma). I had agreed that they could take anything they didn't like the look of. I'm in the UK and have not had any antibiotics, so that seems not to be the guidelines in my part of the UK.

I'm hopefully still NED and have just had my stoma reversal op so am feeling a bit rough at the moment. I've been on Niraparib, but with a break for the op so I'm slightly apprehensive about the next CA125 test (in 3 weeks). Fingers crossed!

Hope this helps.

I had mine removed too and think I agreed to anything they didn’t like the look of.

I think the antibiotic thing is for the removal of the spleen (which I also had at a later date!) not the appendix

Hi Dog LoverThat makes more sense, my daughter was in danger of losing her spleen after being kicked by a horse, and they mentioned that as a consequence.

It sounds like we were both of the mind for them to just get rid of anything dodgy!

definitely! I went in for a laparoscopy, he brought me round to see if I wanted him to do the full surgery! Yes of course was my answer and my husband had to sign the consent form with me!!

I hope you are feeling better soon, and don’t worry about a break from the Niraparib. I had a 3 week break due to low bloods but all was ok. It was supposed to be 4 weeks but my consultant was off and I convinced the registrar to let me back on it!!

That is hilarious about you being woken up to consent to further surgery, thank goodness your husband was around to help you sign😂It's going to be 7 or 8 weeks in all, although if my wound is looking good I will take a leaf out of your book and pushing to see the consultant earlier!

Definitely ‘bully’ them!! I didn’t have that surgery but I know how it feels to be on the tabs as your safety net!

Wishing you well, keep me posted xx
